INVENTOR Kfz/u am m/P OLsso/v BY @www www@ Patented Sept. 20, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OARLOCK Karl Erik Filip Olsson, Klockargarden, Orno, Sweden Application May 23, 1947, Serial No. 750,059 In Sweden September 12, 1946 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to a simple and practical improvement in oars, which is substantially characterized by the fact, that a shaft or the like, Which is adapted to be Xed on the upper side of the loom of an oar and extends in the longitudinal direction of the loom and is situated at some distance therefrom, passes through and is suspended. in a loop provided at the upper end of a preferably arc-shaped rowlock, and that a shoulder, which is located on the underside of the loom and is shorter than the shaft, is adapted, by the displacement of the oar in the longitudinal direction, to be brought in and out of cooperation with another shoulder connected with the rowlock, said rowlock at the propulsion of the boat being adapted to limit the peripherie turning of the oar, said two shoulders, when cooperating with one another, being adapted to limit the peripheric turning of the oar when the boat is going astern. The improvement in question possesses the various advantages of the rowlocks as well as of the row-crutches, but none of their disadvantages.
In a suitable embodiment of the invention the shoulder located on the underside of the loom is formed directly from a fitting fixed on the upper side of the loom and supporting the shaft, and has been given an arc-shaped lower surface. The shoulder connected with the rowlock, on the other hand, consists of an upwards directed portion formed directly from the rowlock. The f1tting adapted to be xed on the upper side of the loom is provided with a wearing -bar serving to cooperate with the rowlock.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figs. 1 and 2 show the device viewed from two sides at right angles to one another.
I designates an oarloom on the upper side of which is iixed a fitting 9 by means of screws I0. With an arm I4 formed from the tting is connected one end of a shaft or pin I3, the other end portion of which enters one leg of an angular part I5, the other angle leg of which is adapted to be connected with the fitting 9 by means of screws I6. Said screws can be screwed through holes I'I down into screw holes I8 in the tting 9. There being several holes I 1, I8, the part I5 may be fixed at various distances from the arm I4. The shaft I3 passes through a loop 3, which is formed from an arc-shaped rowlock 2, the pin 5 of which is turnable in a sleeve adapted to be xed to the bulwark of a boat by means of holes 8 in a tting 1. 6 designates a hole for receiving a cotter pin or the like. From the rowlock is also formed an upwards directed portion 4, and from the fitting 9 is formed an arm II, the lower end of which is provided with an arc-shaped fitting I2.
When rowing in the forward direction, the oar is displaced in its longitudinal direction so that the part I5 rests against the loop 3, and during the pull of the oar the loom is pressed against the rowlock 2, and the device will function as a row-crutch. When the oar is being raised and the oar handle is being moved backwards, it is, however, possible to turn the oar blade in order to reduce the resistance in the same way as when rowing with rowlocks. However, if it is the question of rowing in the backward direction, the oar is displaced in such manner that the shoulder I 2 is caused to cooperate with the portion 4 whereby the peripherie turning of the oar is limited during the pull of the oar.
Different embodiments and modications are of course possible within the frame of the invention. For example, it might be suitable to form the iitting 9 in such manner that a Wearing bar serving to cooperate with the rowlock is obtained. Also other modications may be made Without departing from the fundamental idea of the invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an oar-lock permitting longitudinal displacement of the oar, the combination of a curved standard extending over the top of the oar, said standard having a loop at the top, a tting on the oar comprising a shaft extending substantially parallel to said oar and being arranged at the top thereof, said shaft passing through said loop at the top of said standard, means for limiting the longitudinal displacement of said loop along said shaft, a shoulder at the lower side of the oar, and an abutment on the standard cooperative with said shoulder, said shoulder being of less length than the range of longitudinal displacement of the oar and also being arranged so as to cooperate with said abutment within a predetermined portion of said range of longitudinal displacement of the oar only.
2. An oar-lock as claimed in claim 1, in which said shoulder forms an integral part of said litting comprising the shaft.
3. An oar-lock as claimed in claim 1, in which said shoulder has a curved head.
4. An oar-lock as claimed in claim 1, in which the abutment on the standard is constituted by an angular projection forming an integral part of said standard.
