ROPE-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,744, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed anmbrylZ, 1899. $erial No. 701,951- (No model.)
[0 (tZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS WV. SAMMIS, of the city of New York, (Greenpoint,) borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Rope-Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a rope-clamp or device for clamping and holding a rope which will permit the rope to be freelydrawn through it in one direction, but will hold the rope against returning.
My invention comprises the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my device in use. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig.3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
My device is intended for use in supporting clothes-lines, awning-ropes, and any other use where a rope is to be supported and it is desired to be able to tighten or loosen the same at will.
My device consists of two parts, the body part A, which is in general of a U-section, and the dog or swinging member B, which is of a V shape. The body-section A has two arms 0 0, extending in the same direction as the sides of the body and from near the center thereof. These two arms are parallel and at their outer ends have inwardly-extending lugs O, which face toward each other. These lugs project only a small degree, leaving a liberal passage-way between the two. From the opposite side of the body extends an eye D, to which a rope K may be attached and by which the clamp is held. The dog B is in general ot a V shape and of a width to fit between the arms 0 of the body and swing freely therebetween. At the apex of the V the dog is provided with recesses E upon each side, adapted to engage with the lugs 0 upon the body to form apivot, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. One arm G of the dog is roughened at its flanges I at each edge, formingaguide against which the rope J may act to throw the gripping end of the dog into engagement with the rope. To prevent the dog from falling out of place after insertion, apin F is passed through the arms 0 just within the body of the dog, so that it cannot be removed from place. The dog is inserted by passing it between the arms of the body and then forcing it outward to place. It will thus be seen that the only work of finishing required for this device is the insertion of the pin F, thus making the device a cheap one to manufacture. It is also an efficient and strong device, as the pivot consists of the comparatively large lugs C and not of a small pivotpin. The pin F also serves to support the two arms 0 and prevent their separation.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A rope-clamp comprising two. parts, a body and a dog, the body having two separated arms provided at their outer ends with integral pivot-lugs extending toward each other, the dog fitting between the arms of the body and having outwardly-facing recesses adapted to receive the lugs upon the body, and means for holding the dog outward and in contact with the pivot-lugs, substantially as described.
2. A rope-clamp, comprising two parts, a body and a dog, the body having two separated arms provided at their outer ends with pivot-lugs extending toward each other, the dog fitting between the arms of the body and having outwardly-facing recesses receiving the pivot-lugs, and a pin passing through the arms of the body inside of the dog and preventing its removal, substantially as described.
3. A rope-clamp, comprising two parts, a body and a dog, the body having two separated arms provided at their outer ends with pivot-lugs extending toward each other, the (log fitting between the arms of the body and having recesses receiving the pivot-lugs, one arm of the dog and. the corresponding end of the body being adapted to clamp a rope between then], and the other end of the dog acting as a lever to hold the parts together,
and means for holding the lugs in engagement with the dog, substantially as described.
L. W. SAMMIS.
