Be it known that I, ULYSSES S. IIUGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tellsburg, in the county of Brooke, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillow-Sham Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. l

This invention relates to a pillowsham holder, and particularly to a holder of the class embodying a supporting-pole extending the length of the head portion of the bedstead.

The invention has for its object to provide an improved construction of bracket for supporting a pole, which bracket may be reversed and applied to either side of the bedstead.

A further object is the construction of caps or ferrules placed upon the opposite ends of the pole and resting within the bracket.

The invention has for its object also to provide a novel means for attaching the pillowsham to the supporting-wires carried by the pole.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention. l Fig. 2 is a similar view of the pole and end ferrules. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the ferrule at the left of Fig. l, with the parts in an opposite position; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detail perspectives showing the several adjusted positions of the holder with and without the sham applied thereto.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several iigures of the drawings.

The letter A designates a pole, which may be formed of any desired material, preferably of wood, and through which the ends of a sham-supporting frame A are passed. These ends are bent at an angle to the body, as at A2, to form a loop for the reception of a tape A3 or other suitable material, to which the sham may be pinned or otherwise attached. Upon the opposite ends of this pole ferrules or caps B and B are applied, the former of which is provided at its end with a segmental bearing-surface Bzand locking-point B3. The opposite ferrule B' is provided with a bearing-surface B4, extending entirely around the same. Cooperating with these ferrules and secured to the opposite sides of the bedstead are brackets C, each of which is similar in construction, so that they may be reversed in position or applied to a bedstead by an unskilled person. The ends of these brackets are formed with a recessed head O', having therein an annular bearing-surface, and at the upper and lower portion thereof with oppositely-located recesses or depressions C2. These recesses are adapted to receive 'the locking-point B3, carried by the ferrule B, and thus retain the holder in an elevated posi` tion, as illustrated in Fig. 7. The segmental portion of the ferrule B will move upon the annular face of the recessed head O until the locking-point B3 reaches a position opposite the lower notch O2, and will then drop and rest within the same.

For the purpose of assisting in retaining the ferrules within the sockets and clamping the parts in close contact screw-eyes D are provided, which pass through elongated slots O3, formed in the heads O, and are passed through the ferrules into the pole. These form a convenient operating-handle for the pole, and when screwed into position draw the ferrule into contact with the bracket. By lifting the screw-eye entering` the ferrule B the locking-point may be lifted from the recess and the holder lowered into the position shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The opposite ferrule B', having a complete segmental surface, simply rotates within the bracket at that end.

The operation of the parts will be apparent from the foregoing description; but the particular object of the invention is to provide a structure by which the pole may be reversed in position and operated from either side of the bedstead. This is essential, as in a great many cases one side of the bedstead rests against the wall, in which event the pole is simply reversed to bring the ferrule B to the side of the bedstead most convenient of access. The provision of the oppositely-located recesses in the brackets O permits the same to IOO be applied iu proper position at either side of the bedstead, so that the parts can be assembled for use by any person. Vhenever the position of the bedstead is moved Within a room, the pole can be readily reversed to operate the sham from the most convenient side, and the construction of bracket screw-eye for retaining the parts together prevents any ac cidental displacement of the parts and effectually retains the same in operative relation. The simplicity ofthe bracket permits the same to be stamped from light metal, and the ferruies are similarly formed, so that the parts are iar less expensive than were it necessary to provide castings for the same.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A pillow-sham holder comprisingr a pole provided at one end with a bearing and at the opposite end with a locking-point, oppositely-located brackets having bearing-surfaces adapted to receive the ends of said pole, each of which is provided with opposite locking-recesses and an elongated aperture, and an operating-handle passing through said aperture and into said pole; substantially as specified.

2. A pillow-sham holder comprising a pole, a ferrule at one end thereof provided with a continuous bearing-surface, a ferrule at the opposite end of said pole provided with a peripheral bearing and with a locking-point, bearing-brackets adapted to receive said fer rules, each of which is provided with opposite locking-recesses and elongated slot in its head, attaching and operating devices passed through said brackets and ferrules, andasupporting-framehavingits ends passed through said pole and angularly bent to provide an attaching-loop for a sham; substantially as specified.
