THOMAS C. PUCKETT, OF BATES CITY, MISSOURI.
LANTERN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,336, dated April 18, 1899.
I Application filed January 19. 1899. S ial NO- Z:666- (N0 11105813 To (all whom it nuty concern;
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. PUCKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bates City, in the county of La Fayette and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention appertains to improvements in lantern-holders, the object being to provide means for attaching a lantern to a wagon-pole, the lantern being of such construction that it may be used for other purposes; and with the above ends in view the invention consists in the combination, with a wagon pole or tongue having therethrough an aperture, of a lantern the base of which carries a depending pin for engagement with the aperture, and also with clamping-plates which embrace the tongue on each side of the aperture therethrough.
The invention further consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of the lantern to a wagon-pole. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, the wagon-tongue and attachments to the lantern being shown in section; and Fig. 8 is an inverted plan view.
In the drawings, A refers to a wagon pole or tongue which is provided near its end, but rear of the point of attachment of the neckyoke, with a vertically-disposed aperture to.
The lantern B may be of any suitable type, butis preferably made with closed sides and back and a flat bottom, to which is attached a resilient plate 0, the sides of which are curved and depend a short distance below the lower side of the pole, the edges of the plate being bent outward, as shown. The outward or horizontally flared side edges of the plate 0 converge toward each other, as shown in Fig. 3, and are adapted to receive a slide D, the ends of which are bent to engage the flared side edges of the plate, and when placed thereon the slide may be moved-so as to draw the sides of the plate toward each other to embrace the pole and prevent the lantern turning or being lifted vertically therefrom. The vertical pin O, which depends from the base of the lantern and passes through the plate 0, is of such size that it will enter the aperture be attached to the wagon-pole rear of the neckyoke, and all the fixtures are carried by the lantern.. Thus the appearance of the pole is not marred when the lantern is not aflixed thereto.
My improvements are simple in c0nstruc= tion and may be applied to box-lanterns as now manufactured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a wagon pole or tongue having an aperture therethrough, of a lantern the base of which is provided with a depending pin and means for embracing the tongue, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a wagon pole or tongue having a vertical aperture there through, of a lantern the base of which carries a depending pin, a plate attached to the base of the lantern adjacent to the pin and means for drawing the sides of the plate together so as to embrace the tongue, substantially as shown.
3. In combination with a wagon-pole, of a lantern having a pin which depends from its base for holding the lantern in a vertical position upon the pole, a resilient plate also carried by the lantern said plate being adapted to overlie the pole the edges of the plate bein g bent outward, and a slide carried by the outwardly-bent edges of the plate, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS C. PUCKETT.
