Beit known thatl, LEROY A. SELL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the countyof Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVork-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to work-boxes; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter described.

The object of the invention is to provide a work-box having a suitable drawer adapted to act as a receptacle for scissors and other implements used in sewing, the box also having a compartment adapted to contain the spools of thread, cotton, duc., the box being provided in its top with'a pincushion and having a suitable bail-handle, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of the box open. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View of the box. Fig. is a perspective view of a removable rod used in the box, said rod being adapted to hold the spools. A 1 The lower portion of the box constitutes a casing 1, in the end of which the drawer 2 is adapted to slip. Said drawer is adapted to hold any of the various articles or implements used in sewing. The top ofthe compartment l is provided with the elevated section 3, on the upper surface of which is secured the spring-brackets a 4, whose pressure is normally exerted inwardly and toward each other, the said brackets having in their upper ends suitable notches 5. The horizontal rod G is provided at its ends with squared sec` tions 7, and at the base of the' said squared ends the shoulders S are formed. (See Fig. 3.) The squared sections 7 are adapted to enter the notches 5 of the brackets e 4, and as the brackets 4 have a tendency to bear toward the center of the box the sides of the saidvbrackets come in contact with the shoulders S S of the rod 6, and thus the rod is iirmly held in place and prevented from rotating.

A number of spools, such as 9, may be placed upon the rod G, as shown in Fig. l. The top 10 of the box is hinged to the upper rear edge of the compartment l, the said top lO having in its side a nu mber of perforations l1, through which the thread is led from the spool 9. The forward side of the top l0 is provided with a hook 12 or other securing device adapted to engage a suitable staple 13, located on the compartment l. lVhen the top 10 is closed, the lower edge of the top iits snugly around the edge of the elevated section' 3 ot' the compartment l, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Thus when the top 10 is closed the parts are firmly held together.' A pincushion 14, is set down into the upper portion of the top 10, and the bail-handle 15 is pivotally secured at its ends to the ends of the top 10, and thereby straddles said top. lVhen the top 10 is closed and the box is in use, the bailhandle 15 may be lVhen the top lOis opened, the bail-handle maybe swung under the said top and may come in contact with the upper surface of the table or other article supporting the boX, and thus preventing the sewing-box from tilting over.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A work-box, comprising a lower compartment, a top hinged thereto and provided with a'seres of perforations, and a spool-holder arranged upon said compartment and comprising a pair of spring-brackets exerting pressure normally toward each other and each provided with a notch, and a rod having squared ends and shoulders. formed thereat, the squared ends of said rod being adapted to tit within the notches of the brackets, Whereby said rod is detachably held within said brackets, the latter exerting pressure against the-squared shoulders of the said ends, the thread from the spools being adapted to pass through the perforations of the top.
