llni'rn STATES PATENT Erica,
THEOPHILUS CRISWIOK, OF 'BRIDGEND, ENGLAND. I
WINDOW-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,236, dated April 18, 1899.
Application filed May 21, 1898.
To all Ll/horn it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, THEoPHILUs CRIsWIoK, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Bridgend, in the county of Glamorgan, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for lVindow-Sashes, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates tolocking devices for window-sashes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which the sashes may be locked in a closed position or the upper sash slightly lowered or the lower sash slightly raised for the purposes of ventilation.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a part of one Side of the frame of a window and showing also parts of the upper and lower sashes provided with improved fastening devices; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 a part of one of the sides of a window-frame and at 6 the beads or cleats between which the sashes are placed, and I have also shown at 7 a part of the upper sash and at S a part of the lower sash, and in the practice of my invention I provide a lock or fastening device for the purpose herein specified, which consists of two parts, one of which is secured to the upper sash and the other to the lower sash. 7 That part of my improved lock or fastening device which is secured to the upper sash consists of a vertical rod 9, having a top angle-plate 10, which is secured to the inner face of the side of the upper sash, as shown at 11, and said rod is provided at its lower end with a plate 12, which is secured to the upper surface of the lower cross-bar 13 ofthe upper sash, and said plate projects inwardly and is provided centrally of the end thereof with an u pwardl ydirected lug or projection 14, and the rod 9 is fi rialN 681,344. (No model.)
preferably provided on one side thereof with serrations or teeth 15, as shown in Fig. 2.
That part of the lock or fastening device which is secured to thelower sash consists of a plate 16, the outer end of which is provided with a downwardly-directed extension 17; but this extension is not essential and may or may not be employed, and said plate is cut away on the under side, as shown at 18, and said plate is also provided centrally with an oblong slot 19, and I also provide a transy erselymovable plate 20, which is provided with an upwardly-directed shoulder or projection 21, which passes through the slot or opening 19 in the plate 16 and in which is formed a hole 22. The upper side of the plate 20 is provided with serrations or teeth, and the corresponding lower side of the plate 16 is similarly provided, as shown in Fig. 2. The plate 20 and the shoulder or projection 21 may be moved longitudinally of the plate 16 or toward or from the upper sash and secured in any desired position, it being understood that in order to move the plate 20 the plate 16 must be slightly raised.
Mounted on the vertical rod 9 is a verticallym ovable arm 23, provided with an oblong slot or opening 24, through which the shoulder or projection 21 is adapted to be passed, and said arm 23 is in the form of a link and is provided at its outer end with an upwardly-directed extension or handle 25.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
WVhen it is desired to lock the sashes in the closed position, as shown in the drawings, the upper sash is raised and the lower sash lowered, and the link or arm 23 passes over the shoulder or projection 21., and a padlock 26 or similar device is connected with said shoulder or projection. It will be observed that the opposite sides of the shoulder or projection 21 are beveled, and by reason of the transverse adjustability of the plate 20 the said device may be so arranged as to draw the bottom of the upper sash and the top of the lower sash together, as will be readily understood.
The extension 12 of the bottom plate at the lower end of the rod 0 is adapted to serve as a support for the arm or link 23 when the same is not in use, and in this operation the lug or projection 14.- passes through the slot in said arm or link and prevents the rotation thereof on the rod 9, and the serrations or teeth 15 on said rod are designed for the purpose of preventing the arm or link 22 from slipping on said rod when the sashes are locked together, and it will be understood lflOVttbl .arm or link mounted thereon, a
transvei'sely-movable plate secured to the lower sash and provided with a shoulder or projection which is adapted to passoutwardly through said arm or link, and a lock which is. adapted to be connected with said shoulder or projection, substantially as shown and de' scribed.
2. A fastening device for window-sashes, comprising a rod provided at its upper and lower ends with plates which are adapted to be secured to the side and bottom of the upper sash respectively, a link or arnrvertically movable on said rod, a plate secured transversely of the upper part of the lower sash, a plate mounted thereunder and provided with a shoulder or projection which extends upwardly through a slot formed therein, said shoulder or projection being adapted to pass through said arm or link, and a lock which is adapted to be connected with said shoulder or projection, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention l have signed my name, in presence of the subscribi ng witnesses, this 6th day of May, 1898.
