COMMODE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent ITO. 623,189, dated April 18, 1899.
Application filed March 16, 1898. I
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PRESTON A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richford, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gommode Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in commode attachments, and more particularly to means for supporting in an elevated position commodes and similar articles, the object of the invention being to provide simple and efiicient devices whereby to support a commode at such elevation from the floor that it shall be so disposed as to be capable of use without subjecting the user to the discomforts and inconveniences incident to the use of commodes when placed on the floor.
A further object is to so construct a support for commodes and similar articles that it can be readily folded and moved out of the way when not in use.
XVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of c0nstruc tion and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved support or attachment. Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the application of my invention and showing the commode and its supporting attachment disposed within a washstand. Fig. 3 is a view showing the devices attached to a washstand and in position for use.
'A represents a bracket provided at it rear, upper, and lower corners with pintles 1 2, adapted to loosely enter bearing blocks or plates 3,,and the latter may be secured within the cupboard portion 1 of a washstand 5, or said bearing blocks or plates may be secured to the wall of a room at such elevation that the upper edge of the bracket will be disposed somewhat nearer the floor than the ordinary ch air-bottom.
The outer end of the bracketA is made with two parallel fingers 6 7, located one above the other and each provided with an upwardlyprojecting pintle 8 to loosely enter alined sockets orperforations in the members 9 10 of an arm 11. The arm 11 is provided at its free end with an upwardly-projecting pintle 12,
Serial No. 674,080. (No model.)
which loosely enters a depending boss 13 on a tray or platform 14, said boss resting on the arm 11, and thus the tray or platform is revolubly supported on the free end of the arm 11.
The tray or platform let serves to receive a commode 15, and in order to avoid any possibility of the accidental displacement of the latter several springs 16 are attached at one end to the tray or platform, and at their other ends said springs are provided with hooks 17 to engage the upper edge of the commode, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The device when constructed. as above described can be readily folded, so as to enter and be inclosed within the cupboard portion of a washstand, as shown in Fig. 2, and the platform 14, being swiveled to the arm 11 the commode can be readily turned to cause its handle'18 to project outwardly in position to be readily grasped.
'A latch 19 is pivoted at one end to a lug 20, projecting from the upper member of bracket A, and provided at points between its ends with depending lugs 21, adapted to embrace said upper member of the bracket, and thus relieve the pivot which connects said latch with the bracket from strain. The free end .of the latch 19 is made with a depending lug 22, having beveled ends and having a central notch 23. The upper member 9 of arm 11 is provided with a tooth 24, adapted when the arm 11 is swung out so as to aline with the bracket to engage the beveled lug 22 of the latch, raise it, and then enter the notch 23 when the latch falls. The parts of the device will be thus locked in position for use.
It is evident that my improved support or attachment can besecured at other places than in a washstand and that other articles than a commode can be supported therein.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a support for a commode, the combination with a swinging bracket comprising two arms pivotally connected together so as to permit one to swing in a horizontal plane with respect to the other, of an automaticallyoperating latch for locking said arms in horizontal alinement with each other and a tray supported by the outer arm, substantially as set forth.
ICO
2. In a support of a commode, a bracket adapted to swing in a horizontal plane and comprising two arms pivotally connected together so as to swing in a horizontal plane relativelyto each other, a latch pivoted to one arm and adapted to engage the other arm, a vertical pintle at the forward end of the outer arm, and a tray having a boss mounted on said outer arm and adapted to turn freely on said pintle, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a bracket having pintles at its outer end, of an arm having sockets or holes for the reception of said pintles, a tray carried by said arm, a latch pivoted to the bracket and having lugs between its ends to embrace the bracket, and a tooth plane and a tray supported by said arm, of a latch pivoted at oneend to said bracket and having a notched and beveled depending lug at its free end, lugs depending from said latch at points between the ends thereof and embracing the bracket, and a tooth on said arm to engage the notched, beveled lug of the latch, substantially as set forth.
