UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN UNSER, OF CARTHAGE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO J OSEPHINE M. UNSER, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,809, dated February 21, 1899.
Application led March 8, 1898. Serial No. 673,071. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN UNSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county of J eerson and'State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to fasteners for boxes.
The object of the invention is to provide a fastener for locking and securing the bottom, sides, ends, and cover of the box together.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the box, showing my improved fastener engaged therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a view of the fastener about to be applied. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the fastener applied, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the rotary bolt extending through the sleeve of the fastener.
In said drawings, 1 denotes a box consisting of a body portion 2, which forms the back and cover. The portion 3 is bent to form the bottom and front and the ends 4, having flaps 5, which are adapted to be brought around parallel with and behind the front of the box. These iiaps and the front of the box are provided with registering holes 6, and the lower edge of the cover of the box is provided with a keyhole 7.
8 denotes a plate having a tubular extension 9 formed with slots 10 to provide spring-arms 11, having integral humps 12. This tubular extension is inserted through the holes of the iiaps and front of the box, and the spring-arms are compressed togetherto permit of a washer 13 being slipped over the humps on the arms, when the arms will spring outward, thus securely holding the washer in place.
14 denotes a bolt that is inserted through the tubular extension and is held in place by a @otter-pin 15. This bolt has an angular arm or handle 16, which after it passes through the keyhole in the cover is adapted to be turned down to lock the cover in place. The bolt has an additional function-namely, that of holding the spring arms outward, and thereby preventing them being compressed and allowing the washer to slip 0E.
While I have shown the fastener applied to the box illustrated in the drawings, I would have it distinctly understood that it may be applied to any other form of box now in use in which it is desired to hold the hinged cover to the body of the box.
Although I have specifically described the -construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fastener for boxes, comprising a plate having a tubular extension provided with slits to form spring-arms having humps, a washer slipped over said spring-arms to a point at the rear of said humps, a bolt extending through said tubular extension, and preventing the compression of said arms and thereby the accidental displacement of said washer, said bolt having an angular arm, and means for preventing the withdrawal of said bolt from said tubular extension, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN UNSER.
