Description

Patented Feb. 7, I899.
W. E. MORGAN.
WHIFFLETREE HOOK.
(Application filed Sept. 6, 1898.)
No Model.)
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM EDWARD MORGAN, OF METROPOLIS, ILLINOIS.
WHIFFLETREE-H0 0K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,960, dated February 7, 1899.
Application filedfieptember 6, 1898. Serial No. 690,308. (No model.) i i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WILLIAM EDWARD Mon- GAN, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Metropolis, in the county of Massac and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiflietree-Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in whiffletree-hooks,and especially to a combination ring or band and snap-hook, which band is designed to be fitted over the end of the whiftletree and the snaphook so disposed as to receive and securely hold the trace to the hook, the tongue of the latter being held closed against the nose of the hook both when the trace is under tension and when slackened.
Another feature of my invention resides in a slight modification of the body portion of the hook, whereby it may be secured to a metallic whiftletree in a substantial manner by forming hooked ends which will slide over the free edges of the curved metallic whiffietree and by means of secu ring-bolts held firml y in place thereon.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists,f urthe r,
in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of parts, as will be hereinafter inore'fnlly described and then specifically defined in the. appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanyin g drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation with a part being broken away and showing the trace-chain in dotted lines as slack and in full lines under tension. Fig. 313'. an end elevation showing a slight modification in the body portion of the hook, whereby it may be secured to a curved whifiletree made of metal.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates in Fig.
l 'a whiffietree of usual construction, the end of which is recessed to receive the band portion B of the whiffietree-hook. This band portion has an integral L-shaped nose portion B, with a recessed or cut-away portion, (illustrated at 5,) in which the free end of the tongue 0 is designed to be seated when the hook is closed. Integral shoulders B on the body portion of the band carry, pivoted thereto by means of a bolt D, the contracted end of the tongue, and a spring E, secured at one end to the band, serves to hold the tongue normally closed or with its free end against the nose of the hook, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The free end of saidtongue is bent slightly upward, so as to cause the traceohain F to pull partially against the tongue and nose and prevent the tongue from releasing the link of the trace-chain. The tongue being disposed as illustrated in the drawings will also hold the trace-chain when the latter is in a slack relation, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a slight modification of the construction of the body portion of the band carrying the snap-hook, in which modification instead of employing a band complete I utilize onlya portion of the band and form hooks H at the free edges of the body portion, which slide over the edges of the curved metallic whiffletree, and by the provision of a bolt, as shown, said body portion may be securely held in place.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a whiffletree-hook, the body portion with I
