N ECK-YOKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,593, dated November 25, 1890.
Application filed August 27, 1890. Serial N0. 363,191' (N0 IIIOBL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURENCE M. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookville, in the county of lJefferson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Neck-Yoke, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in neck-yokes.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and strong and durable neckyoke adapted or designed to be attached to the ends of the ordinary neck-yoke which is arranged at the front of the tongue of avehicle to enable the latterto be backed.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a neck-yoke constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse Sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the strut'.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a neck-yoke body, constructed of suitable metal, preferably iron or steel, and being semi-tubular or transversely curved to present an outer convex space and an inner concave face, and it has its ends bent around the ends 2 of the tension-rod and secured within a socket or ferrule 4 by nuts 5, that engage the ends 2, which are threaded and adapted to receive the nuts. The ferrule or socket 4 is provided with a ring 6, which is secured in a perforated flange 7, and the tension of the rod 3 is regulated by the nuts 5. The tension-rod is centrally bent and is supported at the bend bya strut 8, consisting of a head portion 9 and diverging legs 10, having threaded ends 11, which are passed through perforations 12 in the body 1 and are secured thereto by nuts 13, and the said diverging legs are provided at the inner ends of the threads with shoulders 14, which engage the inner concave face of the inner body l. The head portion 9 of the strut is provided with an eye 15, which is formed integral with the strut and arranged at the end thereof to receive the tension-rod 3 at the bend and prevent the same leaving the strut, which is interposed between the tension-rod and the body, and the said head portion is provided with a transverse opening 16, through which passes abolt 17, which secures a clevis 1S to the neck-yoke. The clevis 18 is pivot-ally secured to the head portion, and consists of a U-shaped piece of metal having its ends 19 and 2O perforated to receive the bolt, and the end 2O is provided with a square perforation to receive the squared portions of the bolt 17 and prevent the latter turning, and the clevis is twisted to form an eye at its bend, which will be arranged transversely to the neck-yoke, to receive a ring or the like atthe end of the usual neck-yoke at the front of a team.
It will be seen that the neck-yoke is simple and inexpensive in construction and is strong and durable and not liable to become injured by the strains incident to its use.
What I claim is-g- 1. A neck-yoke comprising the semi-tubular body 1, the tension-rod having its ends secured to the end of the body, the strut interposed between the tension-rod and the body, and consisting of the head portion connected to the rod and the diverging legs secured to the body, and the clevis, substantially as described.
2. A neck-yoke comprising the body 1, the tension-rod having its ends secured to the body,.and the strut interposed between the tension-rod and the bodyand consisting of the head portion provided with the integral eye to receive the tension-rod, the diverging legs having threaded ends and provided with shoulders 14 and secured to the body, and the clevis attached to the strut, substantially as described. y
3. A neck-yoke comprising the body, the tension-rod, the strut interposed between the rod and the body, and consisting of the head portion secured to the rod and provided with a transverse opening and the diverging legs secured to the body, the clevis composed of a U-shaped piece twisted to form a transverse eye and having its ends provided with perforations, and the bolt passing through the perroo forations and the clevis and the transverse the tension-rod, and the olevis attached to the 1o opening of the strut, substantially as and for strut, substantially as described. 4 the purpose described.
