SWAIN PEARSON, OF ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS.
N ECK-YOKE ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,146, dated August 11, 1903. Application filed June 16,1903- Serial No. 161,710. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SWAIN PEARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to neck-yoke end attachments; and it specifically relates to devices for supporting a neck-yoke from the breast-straps of double (two-horse) harness.
The object of my invention is to produce a neck-yoke attachment which is simple in construction and capable of great durability.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a full-size horizontal elevation of a neck-yoke end attachment embodying my invention. of the clasp and the ends of its attached supporting-rod. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the eye at one end of said rod, said eye being exposed by removing the nut and breaking awaya portion of the clasp. Fig. 4 represents, on a smallscale, one end of a neck-yoke adapted to receive my improved neck-yoke attachments.
Each of these attachments is composed of three principal parts-viz., a clasp which is adapted to be attached to the end of a neck yoke, an iron loop attached to the clasp, and an antifriction-roller mounted on the upper end of the loop. 1 designates the said clasp, which is made from heavy sheet metal b'ent intoa C-shaped form, with its ends being bent outwardly, as shown.
The iron loop 3 is formed of round iron rod bent into the shape shown in Fig. 1. In the ends of the clasp 1 are circularopenings, through which passes one end of the looped rod 3, this end being screw-threaded and provided with a nut 4. The opposite end of the rod 3 is bent to form an eye 5, which is placed between the ends of the clasp 1 when assembling, and the threaded end of the rod is then forced through said eye 5 and through the The ends of the rod are then drawn together by means of the not 4. Surrounding the middle portion of the rod 3 is a tubular antifriction- The diameter of that portion of the Fig. 2 is a central section rod '3 on which said roller is mounted need not be reduced.
Secured within the metal clasp 1 is a leather lining 7, which serves to prevent rattling of the clasp upon the yoke and also prevents cutting or wearing of the yoke by said clasp. Said lining is held in position by two split rivets 8.
Each end of a neck-yoke adapted to receive the above-described attachments should have suitable stops 9 thereon, which will prevent the clasp 1 from slipping toward the center or off the end of the yoke. The clasps are opened out and placed upon the ends of the yoke 10 between the stops 9, and the nuts 4 are tightened up. One end of each breaststrap of the harness is detached from the hame-ring, and said straps are passed through the respective loops 3, and their ends are reattached to the hame-rings. Thus the respective ends of the neck-yoke will be supported by the two said breast-straps. The rollers 6 will protect said straps from being worn out by drawing through the upper ends of the loops 3.
It will be evident that the above-described neck-yoke attachment will be more durable and cheaper than the devices usually ern= ployed for the same purpose.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A neck-yoke end attachment comprising a sheet-metal clasp having openings through its ends, a leather lining riveted to the inside of said clasp, a looped rod having at one end an eye, said eye being disposed between the ends of said clasp, the opposite end of said looped rod being threaded and passed through said eye and through theopenings in the ends of said clamp, and a nut engaging the threaded end of said looped rod, substantially as described.
2. A neck-yoke end attachment comprising a sheet-metal clasp having openings through its ends, a leather lining riveted to the inside of said clasp, a looped rod having at one end an eye, vsaid eye being disposed between the ends of said clasp, the opposite end of said looped rod being threaded and passed through In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
SWAIN PEARSON.
said eye and through the openings in the ends of said clasp, a nut engaging the threaded end of the looped rod, and an antifrictionroller mounted directly upon the end portion of the loop, said end portion being straight to provide an arbor for said roller, substantially as described.
