GLOTHES PIN.
(Application filed May 17. 1897.)
(ModeL) THE mums vzrzns co., PHQTO-LITHQ. WASHWGTON. n. c.
, UNITED STATES PATENT F F ICE.
CLOTHES-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,444, dated January 31, 1899.
Application filed May 17, 1897. Serial No. 636,988, (ModeL) I T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SIMMONS, of the city of California, Moniteau county, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to clothes-pins; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing one of my improved clothes-pins in position for use upon a line. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the clothes-pin shown in Fig. 1. Fig.
3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a horizontal.
section taken approximately on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view analogous to Fig. 4 and showing a modified form of thimble.
My improved clothes-pin consists of a single piece of wire and a thimble. After the wire has been cut to the desired length and bent into the desired form it consists of the .central U-shaped portion 6, the parallel portions 7, extending upwardly from the ends of the U-shaped portion 6, the coils 8, extending upwardly from the ends of the parallel portions 7, the parallel portions 9, extending downwardly from the coils 8, and the free ends 10.
When seen in side elevation, as in Fig. 3, the U-shaped portion ,6 and the free ends 10 form a flaring opening at the lower end of the, clothes-pin, the upper ends of these parts being apparently in contact. The parallel portions 7 and the parallel portions 9 are identical in appearance and form a Wedge-shaped opening 11. The coils 8 are identical in appearance and are in horizontal alinement. When seen in front or rear elevation, as in Figs. 1 and 2, the parallel portions 9 are between the parallel portions 7.
The thimble 12 is inserted horizontally through the coils 8, and the ends of the thimble are upset or expanded to prevent said thimble from being withdrawn from its position. The thimble acts as a stiffening device to strengthen the coils and to hold said coils from spreading apart.
vent the coils from being drawn toward each other.
The clothes-pin thus constructed is placed upon the line and in engagement with the garment in the usual way, and when in position upon the line the line extends through the wedge-shaped opening 11.
I claim 1. A clothes-pin constructed of a wire bent to form the U-shaped central portion 6, the parallel portions 7 extending upwardly from the ends of said U-shaped portion, the coils 8 extending upwardly from the ends of said parallel portions 7, the parallel portions 9 extending downwardly from the opposite ends of said coils from said portions 7 and passing between said portions 7 thus forming the wedge-shaped opening 11 and the free ends 10 extending downwardly from the ends of said portions 9.
2. A clothes-pin, consisting of a wire bent to form the U-shaped central portion 6, the
parallel portions 7 extending upwardly from the ends of said U-shaped portion, the coils 8 extending upwardly from the ends of said parallel portions 7, the parallel portions 9 extending downwardly from the opposite ends of said coils from said portions 7 and passing between said portions 7 thus forming the wedge-shaped opening 11 and the free ends 10 extending downwardly from the ends of said portions 9, and the thimble insertedthrough the coils 8 and secured in position as required to hold said coils from spreading apart, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
