FRED D. HARDING, OF BALDWIN, MAINE..-
e-ARMEN -suPPoaT'ER CLASP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 531,415, dated December 25, 1894.
Application filed February 7, 894:. Serial No. 499,349- (No model.)
1'0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED D. HARDINGga. citizen of the United States of America, residing. at Baldwin, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporter Clasps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in garment supporter clasps and particularly to improvements in the device described and claimed in my application for patent of the United States, Serial No. 494,374, filedDecember 22, 1893.
It consists in improved means for preventing the garment from drawing out of the clasp, in means for preventing the lever arm of the clamping jaw from getting into the passage between the top and base of the plate, and in certain details of construction which will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed. 7
In the drawings herewith accompanying and making a part of this application, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved clasp. showing garment locked therein and supporter strap attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a per spective view of the clasp alone, and Fig. 4
is a perspective view of the plate and clamping device separately, a part of the ing removed to show the slot.
Same letters refer to like parts. L
In said drawings a plate is shown folded back upon itself to form a base a, top part b and an opening 0 between them. In the base is an upward vertical set-ofi d and a horizontal extension in which is a slot f. In the top I) is mounted a clamp composed of a clamping jaw j and 'a lever arm i which is adapted to sink below the top I) througha hole It made in said top. The strap or supporting brace may be attached to the clasp in any convenient manner. These features are substantially the same as was disclosed in my said application.
In practical operation it was found that certain classes of goods would draw out from plate bebetween the clamping j aw and the set-off when great strainwas applied thereto. To obviate this objection I make a slot or recess 6 in the vertical wall of the set-0E portion of the plate. When thus arranged the cloth of which the garment is composed is forced by the clamping jaw into said recess and is more firmly held in consequence thereof. To further increase the holding power of the clampl may make on the lower extremity thereof a setofl' m as seen in Fig. 4in such position that when the clamp is forced forward the set off m is forced into said slot e. This renders it extremely difficult to draw the garment out while the clamping jaw is in position and renders the device very efiicient. At the same time it does not lessen the ease with the garment released. In order to prevent the clamp from swingwhich the garment is moved backward and ing over so as to bring lever arm 1' into the opening between the top and base of the plate, I journal the clamping device to the front end of the top b on therod Z and make thereon shoulders 91- which, when the clamping jaw j is pressed backward, bring up against the bottom of the top plate and limit its backward movement. Its forward movement is limited, of course, by the end j com-. ing in contact with the set-off'portion (1.
- .Havingthus described my invention and its use, I claim 1. In a garment supporter clasp, a plate folded to form jaws, the base having an upwardly extending set-off therein near its forward end and a slot in the vertical wall of said set-0E, the top having an angular clasp. pivotally attached thereto, one end adapted to press the garment down upon the base and .forward into said slot and the other end serving as a lever, and means for attaching the clasp to the supporter strap, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a garment supporter clasp, a plate bent toform jaws, the base having an .upwardly extending set-off therein near its forward end and a slot in the vertical wall of said set-off, a clamping jaw pivotally attached to the top and having a set-0E on its lower extremity adapted to enter said slot, and means for attaching said clasp to the supr0 tion of said clamping device, and means for attaching said clasp to the supporting strap, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of January, 1894:, at Portland, Maine.
FRED D. HARDING.
