Description

nii-2n faire @anni faire 'IMPROVEMENT IN HOISTING MACHINES FOR GBLLARS.
tite tigetnle aferra it in 115252, ettert Etaient mit mating putt nf tige same.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that'I, JAMES INGRAM, of the city and State of New York, 'have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Hoisting Machines for Cellars; and I do herebyr declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of my said hoisting machine; and
Figure 2 is ai vertical section of the same at right angles to iig. l,
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Hoisting machines have heretofore been made' for the cellars of stores and warehouses, but they are expensive and notcadapted to use in dwellings by servants, and difficulty is often experienced in carryingup ashes out of cellars and in taking down provisions.
The object of my. invention is to provide for the speedy raising or lowering ci' any article, such as provisions, barrels of ashes, Snc., from or to the cellars of dwellings, without the 'cumbersome and dangerous mechanism heretofore employed for stores and warehouses, my mechanism being adapted to remain stationary at any poi-nt to which the article may be raised or lowered without the use of pawls, levers, or any friction clamps heretofore employed.-
The nature of my said invention consists in a pair oi' screws combined with a sustaining frame, and-actuating gearing arranged so as to be actuated by a crank-handle and raise or lower a platform, the whole being fitted in such a mannerthat it is adaptedito use in dwellings by the most inexperienced hands. Y
In the drawing; a is a frame connecting with the` upper ends of the guide-bars Z1 b, which, at the bottom end, a re formed as or attached to the legs c c, that are fastened into a agstone or other support at the bottom of a.
shallow pit below the level of the cellar` floor fZ. e c are screw-shafts sustained by steps at the top and bottom,V
said screws being parallel to the guide-bars b b, and having at their lower ends bevel-gears, f, taking similar gears, g, upon the cross-shaft L, that is driven lby mitre or bevel gears upon the shaft z', that is provided with a crank or lllandle, 7c, for turning it with. Z is a platform guided by thc bars 6 b, and having nuts taking the screws e It will now be evident that by rotating the handle ic the platform l can be raised or lowered together with any article placed upon it, and that it will remain in anyposition at which it may be placed; and when lowered entirely down, said platform comes level with the cellar door, or nearly so, the gearing and shaft being in the pit below it. The ends of the platform l, that set against the sides of the. bars b, may be madesuliici'ently wide to prevent the platform tipping or causing the nuts to bind or bending the screws in consequence of Vthe weights being placed upon one side or edge of thc platform l; thus said bars b b guide the platform, prevent the screws bending, and connect the top and bottom bearings for said screws.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the shaft 7L, gears and handle for rotating the screws e e, in combination with the guide-bars b b and platform Z, as set f'rth, to form a hoisting machine for cellars or buildings, as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this twenty-first day of March, 1866i JAMES INGRAM.
