Description
l@uiten tates a'trnt @fitta JOHN RICHARDS, OF GINCINNA'IVI, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 65,274, dated ag/ 2S, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN HANGER FOB SHAITING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Bc it known that I, JOHN RICHARDS, of Cincinnati, inthe county of IIamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hangers for Shafting; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hanger.
Figure 2, a front elevation of the same; and
Figure 3, a top view.
Figure 4, a view of-dripping cup detached.
Similar letters of reference on the different figures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of this invention consists in constructing a hanger for shafting Witha swinging crane-piece for supporting the box, pivoted on or near the face of the hanger-plate, and in the mechanism for adjusting the same in a vertical direction, as hereinafter described.
Shafting, when mounted upon posts or other supports, is liable to get out of line by settling of the building or other causes, and requires some ready and convenient means for vertical adjustment, as well as provision for the boxes to adjust themselves to a true or false line in case of settling of buildings, or in adjustment of the hanger in erecting. The box being tted before mounting the hanger-plates, it is almost impossible to get a true t with the shaft, unless by a pivoted box, free to adjust itself to any position within the usual scope 'of measurement for the line of the shaft. In the hanger illustrated, these conditions are provided for with but little fitting, and While the boxes are freely pivoted on two planes, they can be readily adjusted, even while the shaft is in motion.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I u'ill'proceed to describeits mode of construction and manner of operating, with the aid of the drawings. I
The main plate E is not unlike that of the common post hanger, and is provided with bolts, shown in broken section at j', for the purpose of attaching the hanger to a post or to a wall. AThe pivoted box-support Y has a cylindricalextension, b, cast on its longer side, next the hanger-plate. rlhis cylindrical piece is arranged to swing freely upon its supportsthe pivoted head-screw d, and bearing S, The boxes or bearing S arelcored out large enough to receive the cylindrical shank on Z1 without fitting, and high enough to allow an adjustment of the box-support Y, as shown in the dotted lines, iig..1. The box a is of ordinary construction, and is pivoted on points to move freely in a vertical piane, while the crane-piece` or box-support Y provides for its free adjustment in a horizontal plane. The ange extensions p are to catch the Waste oil from the box, and are corrugated on their upper surface so as to lead the oil into the holcshown by dotted lines at @,iig, 1. The oil-cup m has a square shank, as shown in iig. 4, and is attached by passing the. square shank into the hole at o, where it is retained by a screw or other suitable means. The bearing is adjusted vertically by means of the screws LZ and R, Aas will be readily seen in the drawings, the screw R being used to guard against accident from upward strain of belts, and to keep the box-support Y down firmly on the supporting screw d.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and the mode of its construction, vwhat I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hanger for shafting, constructed with the pivotcd boxsupport Y, and its means of adjustment, operating substantially in the manneifand for the purposes herein set forth.
