TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. BLISS, of'Oxford, in the county of Benton, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved Sca'old for Builders, Snc.; and I do hereby declare that the following is-a full,`cles.r,' and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of thisspecification.
Figure 1 is an `end view of my improved scaffold when arranged for use.
Figure 2 is a front View of -the samel Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved sca'old, for the use of carpenters, masons, painters, Snc., which shall be simple in construction, strong, durable, and easily adjusted to any desired height; and it consists in the combination of the right-angled pivoted frame and adjustable sliding bars with each other, 'as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a right-angled triangular frame, the arms a1 and a2 of which are securely framed to each other at one end, and their other ends are secured in place by the inclined braces a3. The frames A are still further streng-tb cned at the angle by the-triangular boards a* upon each side, between which is pivoted the upper end of the post or bar B, to the lower end of which is securely pivoted'a link 'er band, C, which passes aroundthe said lower end of the bar B, and around the bar D. The bar D has a link or band, E, rigidly attached to its upper end, which also passes around and slides up and down onthe bar B, as shown in thedrawings. 4The bar D has notches, d', formed upon its side furthest from the bar B, into which the end barl of the link C may enter, and thus ,support the ,scaiold securely in any position in which it maybe placed. This construction enables the sca'old to be easily adjusted toany desired height.-
In using the apparatus, the extension-bars B and D are adjusted according tothe height at which it is desired to have the platform or staging. The bars are then set in an inclined position, with ohne side of the right-angled frame A resting against the wall or frame of the-building, and the planks or staging-boards F are placed upon the projeetinghorizontal side of said frame A. By this construction the'greater part of the weight upon the scaffold will be sustained by the pressure of the vertical side of the frames A against the wall or frame of the building. The lo-wer end of the bars D should be made pointe-d, and should be shed or plated with iron, so that it may enter the ground and be prevented from slipping. Y
I claim as new, and desire to secure 4by Letters Patenti The combination Aof the right-angled pivoted frame A and adjustable sliding bars B and D with each other,
substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose setrforthn.
' Y JOHN E. BLISS.`
