TO ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, C. C. LYMAN, of Edinhoro, in the county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful -Improvements in Platform-Scales; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view cf the scales.
Figure 2, a side view of the same.
Figure 3, an end view of the cam.
Like letters refer to like parts in the different views presented.
A 1) is the hed or framework of the scales, in which is arranged the platform B. This platform is raised and lowered in the frame, in order to throw the weight upon or off the scale-bearings in the following manner: On the cross-sill C (Eg. 1) are mounted the shafts D D', which have their bearings in a pair of boxes, E. On the end ofthe shafts, and immediately under each end of the sills F of the platform is a cani, G, (iig. 1,) and upon which the sills rest when lifted from the scale-bearings. The position of these shafts and cam is indicated by the dotted lines in fig. 2, in which Gr are the cams and D the shafts. An end view of the same is shown in fig. At the Centre of each shaft is keyed a douhle-grooved' pulley, H, which are connected to cach other by a rope or chain, I. It will he observed that the chain or rope is not continued in its course around the pulley, but that it consists of two separate pieces, the end of cach being fastened in the periphery of the pulley, Yand a separate groove provided for each one, thus making a double-groove pulley, as shown in iig. 1.-
1t will he obvious that as the shaft D is turned by the crank J, or by any other appropriate mechanical appliance, the shaft D will also turn at the saine time, and thus both will act simultaneously, causing the cams to impinge upon the sills at once, thereby either.v raising or lowering the platform oil' or down upon the scalcbearings, as the case may be. Y i
The peculiar advantage of this invention is in elevating the platform of track-scales, thereby allowing engines and heevy-'freighted cars to pass over the platform without touching thescale-bearings, unless required todo so for the purpose of weighing, in which case it is easily and readily adjusted, by moans of the cams,- in the manner as above described.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. The cams G, shaft D, and pulleys H, as arranged in combination `with the platform B, for the purpose and in the manner set forth.
C. C. LYMAN.
