IMPROVED HORSE-POWER.
@its Sdgctnlc nient tu im tlgese ettets @anni filmmaking tart nf tige same.
To -ALL WHOM ytratar CONCERN;
` Be it known that I, MICHAEL G. GROFF, of.Vog ansville, in the county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, have vinvented new and useful Improvements on a Combined Jack and HorsePowergand I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact descriptionv of the construction and operation of the same,' reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure `1 is a perspective drawingof the jack and horse-power coinbined. `Figure 2, a plan view of the horse-power. Y
Figure 3, side elevation and portions enlarged. Figure 4, the gear of the jackV in part. i. The nature of my invention consists in" bringing the gearing in a horizontal. line, and so arranged as to divide the friction, and consequent wear, counterpoise the pressure, and to increase the power and -durability of the machine, together with a stationary platform and. minor improvements.T To enable others skilled in the art to malte and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction antloperation. n v
The mainsor sweep-wheel A is in a horizontal position, say six feet in `diametenheld in a. square frame, K K K K, at four points, hy bracket-plates. These frnme-pieces have one end extended, as shown. A crossbrac'e, cLmay also be added, as shown by the` dotted lines in g. 1, as is common for connecting the draught of the horses, being simply levers for turning the main wheel A.
This Wheel has centrally-raised cogs, slightly brevelon the upper .and lower surface, leaving a. planeiiange on both the inner and outer circumference. `This flange, on the inside, is embraced by a series of pulleys, D, having overlapping flanges, which 'answer for friction-pulleys, as well asto support the main wheeh )ther friction-rollers, I J, fig-3, may be employehfas in other instances.
l The pulleys K are held in brackcts attached to the fo'ur posts `E,'-an 1 also otherwise to thc frame G G' H, `to which the posts E are irmly'fastcnod and stayed by cross-pieccs or otherwise.-
A'shaft, I3, having its bearings -monnted in the 'front 'and rear cross-pieces GG', is provided with two pinions, C C, said shaft being slightly-inclined, so that the one meshes into the co'gs of the upper surface of the main `vrl1eel,^m1d the other nfthose on its lower surface.` This shaft is connected, by means of a universal joint, L F,to the shaft M, that drives 4the joel-e0, or outside gear and band-wheel N, fig. 1.
The 'jack O is also provided with cogs -on cach side, and angearound the circumference,vto which the' brackets orl curi-eil arms z arc aiiixed, standing bliquely to the shaft T, so that the tw'o pinions t mesh into Athe cogs on the/opposite sides of the same. v l i l The shaft 'I hasits bearingsin a bracket on the rear cross-piece q, and box or journalon theside-piece r. To this shaft the band-wheel N is ai'lxedff l A circular or square stationary platform is supported onthe fposts E.
Fig'.` 1 shows a lever in a slot, forV arresting themotion when stopping the machine to loek` the shaft. I Qtherminor details are suggested, `ti'hichlform no part of my invention. .t V
I ain aware that, independently eonsideredthe various` parts forming the combination are not new, but' the arrangement of these several parts constitutes this a horse-power differing substantially from any other of the machincs'oi' the like kind heretofore in use, and, as a whole, husa combination `of features that makes it peculiarly valuable;V and itis confidently believed that, by this arrangement, the wear is lessened, andthe leveragefof the circumference .of the inain and jack-wheel.obtainedV at ltwo pointston the same shaft, in a manner to divide the ordinary pressure, while the horse, pulling on one lever-arm, also pnshe's, so that -the same force applied to move Athe one'pinion in Pulling, exerts the samel leverage on. the other nd of the shaft and pinion by pushing, and must necessarily greatly reduce the power, even if the frictiombesomewhat increased, as a, fair trial of'the machin'ehas clearly proved.
What I claim as my invention, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lThe peculiar arrangement of the main wheel A and jack O, with the horizontal or inclined shafts T B, having each two pinions, the genr connected by the shaft M, which is provided with universal joints, substantially combined in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In combination with my arrangement in the gearing aforesaid, I niso claim the stationary'platform, supported substantially in the manner specified. I also claim attaching the spokes or arms z on theouter circumference of a wheeLYO, which wheel has cogs on both sides, when saidspokes or arms are so curved as to admit the free action of a pinion, t, o n each side of the face of said wheel, in the manner shown and for the purpose'speicied. t
