IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWER.
To all whom it may conce/m.'
Figurel is a perspective view of the machine, with our improvements inplace.
Figurez, a plan view of the same.
Figure 3, a portion of the same, to illustrate one of the two oblique spur-wheels D, and the shaft, bevelled pinions, and boxes, or bearings.
The nature of our invention consists in the arrangement of the triple gear, in which the three distinct shafts have their bearings, on the two cross-pieces in -front of the supporting-frame, the lateral shafts being in an oblique position; 'and each is provided with a spurwheel and two bevelled pinions, and receives motion from the cogs on the under side of the main wheel, which latter also drives a central shaft, provided with a bevelled pinion at its other end, which meshes between the bevelled pinions terminating the oblique shafts, while the enlarged spur-wheels give motion to the central jackshaft, which is in a line with the before-mentioned central shaft, but in separate bearings, and disconnected from it, all the pinions and gear operating in harmony, and so as to promote the transfer of power and neutralize the upward or down-pressure on the central jackshaft. y
The several drawings clearly illustrate this arrangement. Abrief explanation, with reference to the letters marked thereon, will enable any one skilled in the art to make and use our invention.
The central cap and sweeps or levers are not shown, claiming no novelty. i Theobloug frame Q Q shows the cross-pieces R P in front, central crossbeam N, (and rear cross-piece S,) which supports the main wheel A, and gearing, which consists of the two spur-wheels D D', on their oblique shafts M M', inclined from the sides toward a common centre. v
These shafts also support each a bevel-pinion, O, meshing into theco s onthe under side of the main or driving-wheel A, an' terminated by a bevel-pinion, F
and F', respectively.
Between these last-named pinions is a similar pmion, G, connected with a central shaft, L, which eX- tends to the rear cross-piece, and has a bevel-pinion, o, meshing into the cogs on the under side ofthe main wheel A aforesaid.
This shaft has its bearings on the front, central, and rear cross-pieces .P N S.
In a line with this shaft, but not connected with 1t, is the central or jack-shaft K, in boxes or bearings H i on the-cross-picces .P R.
This shaft has a pinion, E, which is actel upon or moved bythe spur-Wheels D D', which act in concert, and neutralize the tendency of being pressed up or down, and transfer their united power to the central or jack-shaft, with its coupling connected, and calculated to drive other machinery.
All the shafts have their separate bearings, or boxes, H. v
Friction-pulleys c may be placed on the blank iiange above and beneath, as may be deemed most desirable.
B shows the central head, without the cap, for the lever-arms.
a, the spokes or cross-braces of the wheel A.
I, iig. l; shows the stout central pivot which supports the main wheel.
The operation is such, that the main wheel gives lnoi tion to three distinct shafts, L M M', at three points of its circumference. The bevel-gear on the ends' of the shafts M M again react upon the shaft L, or are rather aided by it from the vmain wheel and central shaft L, while the spur-wheels D D on the shafts M M impart their united power to the intermediate pinion E on the jack-shaft and its connection.
Ve are aware that patent No. 77 ,945, May 19, 1868, shows a triple gear in a triangular frame, with two oblique and one central shaft, on which latter there is a larger cogged wheel in the centre of the main wheel,
which latter has the levers connected to the circnlnference, (there being no central pivot,) resting on bevelpinions, and held in position by friction-Wheels, the supplemental shaft or jack-shaft `being parallel to 4and beneath the central shaft, the arrangementdilfering substantially in principle of operationand construe` tion; and we disclaim the use of such a combination above referred to.
Nor do we claim the main wheel, with its cogs beneath, and central-bearing, or the blank anges, friction-rollers, and bevelled pinions, independently considered, for such are in common use but we are not aware that the arrangement of spur-wheels D Dvon shafts, with pinions O E, were ever combined substantially with the main wheel and driving-shafts in the manner shown and described. Therefore,
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement ofthe spur-wheels D D on their oblique shafts M M, which are provided with pinions O O and F F, together with the central shafts K L, in a line with each other, with their respective plnions E G O operated by the main Wheel A, combined substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
