power being applied in the normal operation of the apparatus to rotate the nut, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
A further object of my invention isto ermit the attendant on the car to raise or ower the same in case of failure of the motive power. or derangement of the mechanism by which the power is applied to the shaft.
To these ends my invention consists in the novel constructions of apparatus and combinations of arts more particularly hereinafter described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a general side elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a portion of the same apparatus enlarged and in vertical section. Figs. 3 and 4 show the construction of the operating nuts employed when my invention is carried out in the preferred way.
1 indicates the car of the elevator or hoist, which car moves in suitable guideways 2 in the elevator well, as is usual in the art.
2 is a screw shaft connected to the car, preferably to the bottom of the same. When connected to the bottom, as shown, itdepends from the floor of the car to any desired length, according to the extent of travel of said car. At or near the bottom of the well in which the car travels is an operating nut 3 threaded to engage one of the threads upon the shaft 2, the latter being in the preferred construction of my invention provided with the double or reversed threads shown, although it would be' within my invention to dispense with one of said screw threads.
Bolted or otherwise secured to the floor 4 of the car is a bearing or socketv 5 which.
receives the upper end of the screw shaft and in 'which socket or bearing said shaft may turn should the emergency arise requiring that said shaft be turned by the attendant on the car in order to raise or lower the latter. Normally, however, the shaft is held against rotation in said socket or bearing so that upon the application of power to the nut 3 rotating in its fixed bearing or support, said car will be caused or permitted torise or fall. When, however, the shaft is free to rotate in the bearing 5-, itis then turned by the operator of the car. It is obvious that on rotation of said shaft by the operator of the car, the nut 3 or other similar nut being at'such time fixed, or held against rotation, the car will be caused. to rise or fall depending upon the direction of rotation given to the shaft. To normally lock the said shaft against rotation at its point of attachment to the car and to prevent it from becoming detached from its socket or bearing, the foling through the plate and into sockets or openings in the flange 5. When itis desired, however, to permit the shaft to rotate in its bearings 5, the pins 9 are removed so that the plate 6 and attached parts may rotate freely, access being had to the pins 9 for this purpose through the cover 10 in the floor of the car, which covers the opening therein in which the plate 6 is mounted. When free to rotate in the bearing '5 the shaft 2 may be rotated by the attendant on the car by manual or other power suitably applied to said shaft. As typical of means that may be employed for this purpose I show a bevel wheel 12 keyed to the screw shaft 2, and a crank ,13 mounted in suitable hearings on the. side of the car and connected through a chain and sprocket wheels suitable source through shaft 17 or other-- merely typical of a wide variety of devices,

It is obvious that the car may be raised or lowered when the screw shaft is fixed against rotation in its bearing or connection with the car by rotating nut 3 in one or the other direction- In the preferred manner of carrying out my invention I 'employ a second nut 3 which has a thread the reverse of that for nut- 3 and engaged with the reverse one ofthe two threads shown on the shaft, so that by rotating the nut 3 the shaft may be raised, and by rotating the nut 3'v in the same direction the shaft may be lowered, said'nuts being operated in alternation"- and alternately vcoupled to the counter-shaft 20 by the employment of the double cone clutch shown, which is provided for this purpose with a cone 19 governing the connection for shaft 20 with a second wheel 21 engaging the gear 18' on the periphery of nut 3.
Inasmuch as the manner of controlling a the application of the motive power to raise or lower the elevator by' the attendant on the car is well understood in the art and forms no particular part of my invention the same is not shown. It is obvious, how
, ever, that with the special power controlling the nut-131 show a devices shown, a movement of the clutch in one direction from the neutral position shown will couple the power to the nut 3, leaving the nut 3 disconnected, and a movement in the opposite direction will couple nut 3 to the power, leaving nut '3 disconnected, thus permitting the car to be raised "timlowered at will.
In addition to the appliance described, I employ suitable means whereby either or both. of the nuts 3, 3 maybe locked against when two nuts are employed and the power is applied through a clutch, which in its neutral position disconnectsthe power from both nuts: As typical of such a device for v pinion 22 adaptedto be shifted on shaft 23 into and out of gear with the gear 18 on nut 3, said pinion being locked against rotation when in gear by any means. A similar pinion 22 may be employed for the nut 3' and, said pinions beingrigidly connected on the same sleeve,

The operation of the apparatus is as follows: Assuming that the power is connected to the nut 3, that the same is free from its locking device and'free to rotate and that the screw shaft 2 is fixed in its bearing 5 'on the car and incapable of rotation therein, the application of the power to the nut 3 will cause the car to rise or fall according to the direction of rotation of said nut and the direction of the thread of said shaft with which it engages. Assuming the one nut 3 only to beemployed, it is obvious that the car may be raised or lowered by turning the nut 3 in one or the other direction.
If all the devices shown be employed, how-- ever, and rotation of the nut 3 be effective in raising the car, it is only necessary to shift the power to the reversely threadgdnut 3 engaged with the reverse thread on the shaft 2 in order to lower the car, said nut 3 being at such time freed from thecontrol of the devices which may 'be'employed to lock it against rotation.
In case of failureof the motive power or other derangement which would prevent the raising or lowering of the car by the operation of the nut or nuts, the car may be raised or lowered by the attendant by uncoupling the plate 6 fixed in the upper end of the shaft from the hub or bearing 5 so as to allow' the shaft to rotate and then rotating shaft 14 and shaft 2, which may then turn in its bearing 5,,and an operating nut, the latter bemg at such time fixed, against rotation. Obviously, by rotating both the nuts at the same time oppositely to each other,
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination substantially as described, of an elevator car, a screw shaft connected thereto and heldagainst rotation in its bearing on said car, a nut mounted on a fixed bearing and engaging the thread of said shaft, means for rotating said nut, means for freeing the'shaft to permit'it to rotate in its bearing on the car and means on the car for rotating the same.
2. The combination with an' elevator car, of a screw shaft depending therefrom, means for fixing .it against rotation in its bearing they would cooperate to raise or lower the shaft.

4. The combination with an elevator car, of a double threaded screw shaft connected thereto, a pair of nuts, a motive power shaft, means for coupling the power to one or the other of said nuts at will and means for locking both nuts when the power shifting appliance is in neutral position.
5. The combination with an elevator car, of a screw shaft connected thereto, means for fixing the same against rotation at its oint of connection with the car or freeing 1t at will, a nut engaging said shaft and mounted on a fixed bearing, means for applying power to said nut, means for locking said nut against rotation and means on the car for rotating the shaft.
6. In an elevator, the combination substantially as described, of a car, a screw shaft normally fixed against rotation and connected to the car, said shaft being provided with a pair of reversed threads, and a pair of correspondingly threaded nuts mounted on fixed bearings and engaging said threads respectively, said nuts being provided with means whereby they may be rotated tb operate the shaft.
