TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. A. McREYNoLDs, of Elkton, in the county of Todd, and State-rot' Kentucky, have invented a new and improved Table-Fan; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and ex/act specification ofthe same, wherein I have set lforth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
This invention relates to an improved mechanism for operating a fan, designed more especially for keeping dies and other insects oif froma table while meals are being eaten.
The invention consists in a peculiar construction and arrangement of the several parts, as hereinafter fully shown anddescribed. In the.` accompanying drawings- Figure 1 represents a side view ot' my invention.
Figure 2, a section pertaining to the same', taken in the linea: fc, fig. 1.
Similar letters of. reference 'indicate like parts.
A is a framing, constructed in any proper manner to support the working parts, and B represents a train of wheels by which motion is transmitted from the driving or power-sbatte to the fau .or fans to be operated. The motor is a weight, C, having a chain or cord, b, attached, which is secured to a drum, c, on the driving-shaft a, the chain or cord being attached at its centre to the drum c. Each end of the chain or cordis provided with a hook, d, on either of which the weight C may be suspended. D is a suspended or` swinging frame attached to the upper part of the framing A, and having one or more fans, d', attached to its lower end. This fan has an oscillating or swinging motion imparted to it by means of a rod, E, connected with a crank-wheel F'on the last and mostrapidly-driven shaft of the train of wheels B. The rod E has a pendant, G, attached at the point where it is connected to the frame D; and a weight. H., is secured to the lower end ofthe pendant. The rod E is not attached directly or rigidly to the crank-wheel, but te a slide, I, fitted in a radial groove, e, in the crankwheel, and having a spring, f, bearing against it, said spring having a tendency to keep the slide I pressed inward towards the centre of the crank-wheel F, as will be fully understood by Areferring to iig. 2.
This device does not require to have the weight wound up; all that is necessary to do when the weight is run 'down is to detach it from the `hook d it is on, and suspend it upon the other hook d, it being understood that the chain or cord b is attached at its centre to the drum c, and that when one hook is being drawn down 4under the action of the weight the other hookis being elevated.l This changing of the motor or weight from one hookto the' other,'otl course involvesa reverse movement of the train of wheels, but this is'of no consequence whatever, so far as this invention is concerned, the operating of the frame D being precisely the saine under either direction in which the train of wheels B may move. The weight H, attached to a pendant, G, of the connecting-rod E, assists the crank-wheel F in passing its centres, while the attaching of the rod E to the slide I, governed by the springf, obviates jarsand concussions, causing the devicc to run smoothly, and with the least possible degree of wear and tear. This device may be constructed at a very moderate cost, and will prove very eiicient in keeping ies and other winged insects o' from a table during the eating of meals.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The application of a. weight H to the rod E, which drives the oscillating fan-frame D from the crankwheel F of the train of wheels B, for the purpose of assisting the crank-wheel past its centres, substantially as shown and described. i
.2. Attaching the rod E-to a slide, I, placed in a radial groove, e, in the crank-wheel F, with -a spring, f, gearing against the slide, for the purpose set forth. i
3. Attaching the chain or cord b at its centre t'o the drum c, and having a hook secured to each 'end of the shain or cord, to admit of the weight C being suspended to either end rof the chain or cord, when said chain or cord, drum and weight, are used in combination 'with a train of wheels, B, and a swinging or oscillating fan-frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified. l
4. Thecombination and arrangement of the train of wheels B with the weight C, applied as shown, the oscillating fan-frame D, connected to the crank-wheel F, and the weighted or loaded connecting-rod E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
