JOHN THOMPSON, OF HARTVILLE, OHIO.
7 Letters Patent No. 66,416, dated July 2, 1867. i
onumvme APPARATUS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN THOMPSON, of Hartville, in thecounty of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Ghurning; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters marked thereon, of Which- I Figure 1 is a side view of the apparatus, showing its application to a churn.
Figure 2 is a plan of the same.
Figure 3 is an end view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and combination of a double crank-shaft with two churn-dashers, by means of working-beams and connecting-rods, in such a manner as that by rotating the double crank-shaft, the dashers shallalternately move up and down, the said double crank-shaft being operated by gearing, which receives motiomfrom a cord wound around a drum, and passing over a pulley hung to the ceiling, with a heavy weight at its end; and also in so hanging one end of the axle of themain drum or pulley in a lever as that, by raising the lever; the first wheel may be disengaged from the first pinion, in order to .allow of windingnp the weight.
To enable others skilled in the art to makeand use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. I v
A is a plank or frame, forming the bottom or foot of the machine. In .the bottom A are framed the uprights B B and the standard 0.. a is an axle, one end of which is placed in a bearing in the upright B, the other end passing through a slotted hole, g, in the upright B, and supported in a bearing in the lever On this axle a is the pinion K and the drum T. The cord S is wound around the drum T, and passes over a pulley, X, hung to some elevated point, and has a weight, W, attached. The wheel K gears into the pinion L on the axle b, giving motion to the wheel M on the same axle, which gives motion to the pinion N on the axle C, which gives motion to the wheel 0 on the same axle, which, in turn, gives motion to the pinion on the double crankshaft Q. The double crank-shaft Q is connected to the working-beams D and E by the connecting-rods R and S, and the working-beams D and E are connected at their other extremities with the dashers G and F of the churn H. The working-beams D and E are hung on the, bolt V, at the upper part of the standard 0, the distauce from the bolt V and dashers G and F being varied by means of the diii'erent holes in the working-beams D. and E, so that the vertical motion of the dashers and F may be regulated to suit the quantity of cream in the churn. The leverf is held down by the pin it, and by removing the pin 7; the action of the cord S and weight W raises the end 01 of the axle a, so that the Wheel K is thrown out of gear, when by applying, as shown in fig. 3, the cord S, can be wound up.
I do not claim as my invention the wheels K, M, and O, pinions L, N, and p, axles a, b, and Q dashers F and G, but what I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of the double crank-shaft Q, in connection with. the oonnecting-rods R and S, and working-beams D and E, when said crank-shaft is operated by wheel-work, cord, and weight, in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
' JOHN THOMPSON.
