CHARLES D. WALTERS, OE HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM A. MIDDLETON AND H. L. BOWERS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CELLAR-HOISTS OR ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,233, dated January 26, 1875; application filed January 9, 18? 5.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. WALTERS, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jellar-Hoist or Elevator and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of hoisting apparatus which are used in combination with cellar-steps; and the nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of a cellarsteps with my hoisting apparatus attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the hoisting mechanism.
A A represent the side pieces, and B B the steps, of a cellar-stairs, constructed in any ordinary manner. To the outer side of each side pieceA is attached a beam, 0, and on the front of each beam 0 is attached a plate, D, extending the entire length thereof, and projecting a suitable distance beyond the outer side of the beam.
If desired, the beam 0 may be dispensed with and the plates D attached to the fronts of the stair side pieces A.
E represents the platform, which is at each end provided with a metal side piece, G, the inner edge of which is formed with a flange, a, to 'fit under the projecting edge of the plate D, thus connecting the platform to the stairs, and preventing it from wabbling or vibrating in any manner. Above the platform E on the inner side of each of the side pieces Gr is pivot-ed a roller, b, to bear on the front of the plate D, and relieve any friction occasioned tached, the other end being fastened to the end of the platform. Or the cord may pass around one or two pulleys at the end of the platform,-and be attached at the mouth of the stairway on the side opposite to where the shaft H is located. One end of the shaft H is prolonged a short distance beyond the drum d, and on this part of the shaft is placed a frame, I, which is placed within a casting, J', at the top of the stairway, and held in an upright position by a pin, h, passed through the frame and casting, as shown. Within the frame I on the shaft H is secured a pinion, f, which gears with a w0rm,z', formed or secured on a shaft, k. This shaft has its bearings in two bars, L and L, the lower bar, L, being pivoted in the lower end of the frame I below the pinion f. The outer ends of the bars L L are connected by a rod and nuts, as shown, or by a bar permanently attached to them. The inner end of the bar L is slotted and passed through the upper end of the frame I, a bolt, m, being then passed through and fastened by a thumb-nut, a. By this means the worm i is readily thrown in gear with the pinion f for hoisting the platform E, and thrown out of gear for lowering the same. The upper end of the shaft 7c is provided with a crank, P, for turning. By withdrawing the pin it, the frame I and the entire gearing may be turned down so as to allow of the closing of the cellar-doors. This invention may be applied to handtrucks, the platform E forming the foot-board of the truck, which can then be moved upward to facilitate the shouldering of bags, 850.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
