Description

htithtetrs ibidem @fitta IMPROVED CRANE.
dige rlgebule retentir in im tlgese tettera ntwt mit milking gint at tige smite.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Bc it known that I, A. S. BATTEN, of Topsham, in the county of Orange, and State of 1iermonnhave invented anew and improved Crane; and-I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description-thereof, which will enable those skilled in'the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to anrimproved crane specially designed for the purpose of taking sugar-pans from the arch. It consists of a gallows-crane set in a convenient position in the sugar-factory, so that its arm may extend over the pans on the arch, and capable of being swung round to any position desired. .The cross-piece and brace consist each of two beams, or of one beam slotted nearly the whole of its length. An arm is pivoted in the slot of the cross-piece, and is held by lo. rope attached to its free extremity and' passing round a. pulley near the end of the cross-piece, over :mother pulley behind-the pivoted end of the arm, and thence to a windlass worked by a crank in the side ofthe brace. The pans are raised o` the arch by hooks attached to a sleeve sliding on the arm. The accompanying drawing is a side view. of my improved crane.
A is the frame or building in which the crane is set, so that its arm B may extend over the pans C when on the arch; the upright D being set in bearings, enabling the crane to be swung round, as desired. The crosspiece E and brace F consist inthe present instance each of two parallelv pieces, but may be also conveniently made of one piece having a slot therein extending nearly its entire length, so Ythatthe arm B, pivoted in the cross-piece, at b, may rise and fall within said slots.V The arm B is supported at its free extremity by the rope or cable G, which passes over the pulley H held between the pieces composing the cross-piece E at the free end thereof, over the pulley I at the rear end, and thence over windlass operated by the crank K, andl stopped by the pawl and ratchet L. The pans are carried by the hooks M attached to the sleeve N, which slides along the arm B, as desired. In removing the pans it is of the `utmost importance to prevent any disturbance or agitation of the Sirup, -and'it is obvious that by the use of my device a greater amount of steadiness is secured than has heretofore been attainable.
I `claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The crane, consisting of the arm B, pivoted as desc1'ibed,to the double or slotted cross-piece C, and
working therein and in the double or slotted brace F, substantially as above set forth and described.
2. The said crane, in combination with the windlass and'rope or cable, substantially as described. 3. The sleeve N, carrying the books M, .in combination with arm B, substantially as above sot forth and described. l
A. S. BATTEN.
