Description

(NuModeL) J.H:.HOGG. POST DRIVER.
No. 502,075. Patented'July 25; 1893.
UNrrnn STATES PATENT Onnrcnt JOHN H. HOGG, OF CIVIL DISTRICTNO. 16, OBION COUNTY, TENNESSEE.
' POST-DRIVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,075, dated July 25, 1893.
Application filed May 2, 1893.
ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make a post-driver which may be conveniently transported and quickly arranged for work, which will be simple in construction'and can be made at little cost.
Figurel of the drawings is a perspective view of my post driver in its entirety, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the same when arranged across the box, ready for use.
In the drawings, A represents the supporting box made of such a length and width as to sit like an ordinary wagon body on the running gear of a wagonso that the post driver may be conveyed from place to place. On the inside of this box is arranged a longitudinal and detachable bar B in holes a. a of the box-ends and to this is held, by the screw shanked hooks O, the horizontal frame D, through whose cross-bars (1 pass the threaded ends of the hooks which are held by the nuts 0. This oblong rectangular frame D has a Windlass E journaled near its rear end, the same being loose on its shaft 8 and connected therewith by a clutch F operated by a hand lever G fulcrumed on the end of frame D.
H is a frame pivoted at bottom on the front end of frame D so as to fold down longitudinally thereon for convenience of transportation. The frame H consists of two parallel uprights, each pivoted at the bottom to a beam (1' and the two connected at the top by an arch Serial No. 472.765- (No model.)
it preferably made of metal. Under the middle of this arch is swung a sheaveI in which is pivoted a grooved pulley J.
K is a drop. weight or hammer which is grooved on each side so as to slide easily up and down between the uprights h h.
L is a rope connected at one end to the hammer K and at the other to the Windlass E, While it passes intermediately over the pulley J. The Windlass is clutched to its shaft and wound up by its hand crank Zto elevate the hammer to any desired height when the lever G opens the clutch and the hammer falls on the top of post over which it has been arranged. The frame His held in a vertical position by the braces N which are notched at the ends to catch on nails or spikes n and held there by the pins n placed over them in the frame D.
In order to drive posts from the side of the wagon, the frame D is unclamped from the box A, placed across it and similarly clamped and to regulate the frame H so that it will give a perpendicular fall to the weight or hammer,
I make several notches in the free ends of the braces.
What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The box A, the inside bar B, the screwshanked hooks O, the horizontal frame D, the Windlass E connected with a hand cranked shaft by a clutch, the frame H pivoted to one end of frame D and carrying a pulley at the other end, and the weight or hammer connected by a rope passing over said pulley to the Windlass, the frame H being provided with notched adjustable braces as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN H. Hoee.
Witnesses:
JOHNNIE O. Hoec, JOHN H. TATE.
