Piano-Trucks. No, 145,887, Patented Dec. 23,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEc FRAZEE B. MCGREGOR, OF PONTIAC, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIANO-TRUCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,887, dated December 23, 1873; application filed July 25,1873.
, new and useful- Improvements in Truck for Moving Pianos and other heavy bodies; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specilication.
The4 nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a truck for moving pianos, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
ln ordei` to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a perspective view, of my truck. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the truck when used for taking pianos out of, or putting them in, the the box.
A represents a frame, of any suitable di1nen sions-say, about the same size or a little larger than a piano. This frame is provided with two long rollers, B B, located transversely in the frame, and upon whichv the frame may be moved. In the frame A are hinged two smaller frames, C C, one of which is at or about the center and the other near one end of the frame. The two frames C C are at their upper ends connected by a board, E,
`and the top bars of the frames are provided with stuffed or padded bars D D, upon which the piano is to rest. To the under side of the board E is hooked a cord, a, which passes between rollers b b, at the end of the frame A and back to a shaft or roller, G, across the center of said main frame. The shaft or roller G is at each end provided with a ratchetwheel, c, and pawl d, as shown. Upon one end of the shaft or roller G is placed a ratchet lever, H, by means of which the shaft is revolved to wind up the cord c. The frames O C, being raised to a perpendicular position by the windlass G H and rope a, the tops of said frames will be on a level with the bottom of the piano, which is then turned 'over on its side on said frames. The legs and lyre are then taken off; after which the frames O C, with the piano upon them, are lowered, and the main frame A can readily be moved to any place desired.
In moving up and down stairs the piano will he held by means of set-screws through Abars I I, which are pivoted on the inside of the main frame, so that they can be raised and the piano fastened to them by set-screws. For taking the piano out of its packing-box the end of the main frame, where the rollers 11 b are situated, is elevated by and supported upon rods or bars, J J, as shown in Fig. 3, and the rope a unhooked from the bar E. This rope is then attached to the bar generally fastened to the end of the piano, and the piano raised on its end by the windlass G H, when a bar or scantling is laid under the middle of the' piano across the upper edge of the box, and the piano then balanced on said bar or scantling. The piano is then turned over on the frames C C, in the manner above described.
This truck can easily be handled and a piano moved wherever desired by one man, where, without this truck, a number of nien are required.
Having thus fully described my invention,.
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The main frame A, with rollers B B, hinged or pivoted frames O O, board E, padded bars D D, cord or rope a., and windlass G H, all constructed, arranged, and combined substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of July, 1873.
