IMPROVENIENT IN MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
The Schedule referred tain these Letters Patent and m'aking part of the same.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mino WEBB, of Ohenango Forks, in the county of Broome, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consistsin a simple and eiective device for obtaining power by means of springs or weights, which can be used to operate a churn, or for a variety of purposes.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my -invention appertains, tomake and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 isl a front elevation,
Figure 2, a side elevation,
Figure 3, a front view of the escapement-bar and dogs; and
Figure 4, a side view of the driving-wheel, showing its attachment to the main shaft or cylinder.
A represents a frame, of suitable material and dimensions, in the upper part of `which a shaft, B, has its bearmgs.
On this shaft, a cylinder or roller, C, is firmly secin'ed, which cylinder has flanges on its ends, to prevent the rope or chain, which is to be wound ou the same, from slipping off.
A chain, I), is attached to the side of the cylinder C, near one end, which chain is wound around a cylinder, E, secured to a shaft in the lower part of the frame.
A spring, H, is also secured to the said shaft and to the frame, in such a manner that, when the shaft Bis turned, unwinding the chain from the cylinder E, and winding it on the cylinder C, the spring is wound up, and then, by its own force, uuwiuds the chain from the cylinder C, and rewinds it on-to the cylinder E.
At one end of the cylinder C, a cog-wheel, F, is placed on the shaft B, and connected with the cylinder by a awl or dog, a', which works in notches on the flange at t at end of the cylinder, as shown in iig. 4.
vThe pawl a is held in position by means of a spring, b, secured to the inner side of the wheel F.
The cog-wheel F gears into a='pinion, d, on the shaft G, which latter is placed below the cylinder C, and has its bearings in the sides of the frame A.
On the shaft Gis firmly secured an escapement-wheel, I, which is cut with a series of notches on both sides, around its entire outer edge, as shown in iig. 1.
On a cross-bar, on the front side of the frame A, is a plate or bar, e, rmly secured, the ends of which bar are bent downward, and in these bent ends the shaft i has its bearings;
The rear end of the bar e forms, at the lower end, two ears f f, each of which has a small pin, g, extending backward, one on each side of the wheel I. l
On the rear end of the shaft c', the escapement-bar h is secured.
At each end of the bar h is a pin, extending to the rear, and. on these pins th escapeme'nt-dogs o o are pivoted, andthe whole so arranged that they work, one on each side of the wheell I., in the notches thereon, and inside of the pins g g.
A small spring, lm, is attached to the attachmentbar 71., and wound around the pins on the same, and on the inner side ofthe dogso o, so that when the escapement-wheel I revolves, it catches the dog on one side, moving that end of the escapement-bar lz. up until the spring m, on the other side, strikes the ear j, when said dog is thrown out from the wheel. rlhe dog on the other side, in the mean time, being caught on its side of the wheel, carries that end of the bar up, thus alternating, and giving the shaft i a reciprocating motion.
A lever, L, is secured to the shaft t', one end of which lever is connected, by a rod, M, to the balance-wheel N, on the front side of the frame, and to the other end of ,said lever a rod, O, is pivoted, which, at its lower end, is provided Awith a churn-dasher, P.
It will be seen that the churn-flasher P acquires a very rapid up-and-dowumotion, and that this device can be applied to most any purpose where power if, Wanted to drive machinery.
The power produced hereby is not exhausted or used up by complicated gearing, everything being simple, and working with ease.
Instead of using the spring H to drive the machinery, weights may be substituted, with equal advantage.
For the purpose. ofregulating the speed of the machine, and of stopping the same whenever desired, I place a regulator, 1t, on the side of the frame A. Ihis regulator consists of two spring-bars, connected at the top, and extending downward, one on each side of the shaft, to which the balance-wheel N is secured.
Near the upper end, or at any suitable point, a thumbscrew, S, passes through the said spring-bars, so that, by turning the screw, thev bars clasp the balance-wheel shaft the tighter the more the screw is turned, thus regulating the speed or stopping the machine altogether.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by I etters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the frame A with cylinder C, chain D, cylinder E, spring H, wheels F I, shaft G, dogs o o, bar h, shaft i, spring on., -regulator R and its screw S, wheel N, bar L, and rod O, all, with their various parts, constructed andoperat'mg substantially as herein set forth.
