Description

gutter gte-tss 's-tritt @Hirn s PHILIP SOMMER, or NEWA RK, NEW .Inns-EY.
Letters Patent No. 61,575,1fltzted January 29, 1867; anfteclatml January 17, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT Irwin-:Nenes dlgs rlgebuletzfetteh ty iii tlgese tettcrs "ntcnt mit mating peut nf tige time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAYCONCEINr Beit known that I, PHILIP Spia-Miliz, of the city .of Newark, county of EssexkintheSt-ate of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Wrench g and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and 'to the letters of reference marked thereon, iuAvhich like parts are indicated by like letters in t eseveral figures. l
. The natureof my invention consists in constructing a simple, economical, and eective self-:iidjusting-v wrench; the-stronger the pressirre orA pull, the stronger the gripf To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceedrt describeiits construction and operzrtion. In the drawings- Figure lrepresents au elevation oi' my wrench. Figure ZYapart side viewrof the same; v f Figure 3 shows the open condition of the wrench, one jawbeing removed, but shown in red ink outline. Figure is an elevation of one jaw. Figures, 5, 6, 7, and 8, sh'ow a modification o fmy wrench, to be presently explained. v In the several figures, like parts are indicated by-,like letters.
A represents the handle, B 'the staff. The head, orl wrench proper, is composed of two parts or jaws, C
and D, which slide upon cach other, foi` which purpose'the lower parts havt a xnortise and tenen, or dove-tail.
formation, as seen' nt a, g, The rhorizontal'armcf' C has two lugs, b, by which itis p'ivoted'to sta'B by pin c, tig. 3, the top of solid stn' having a lug, Z,entcring'between those bof C.l In the upper part of B there is an oblong slot, d, in which plays a roller, e. A pin,f, passing through the two lower cheeks of D,also passes through this roller, :nid secures D to'B. -In its normal condition, or when the wrench is closed to its fullest extent, or nearly so (as Vseen in fig. 1,) this rolleiuis iu the` position shown in Yblack lines,`linlfig. 3, that is,'it` is at. or near the top of the slot. When the jaws are open, it moves down, and when it reaches the bottom of the slot, as seen in red lines, .(iig. 3,) it limits thelopening of thejztws C and D. Reversing themovement, or closingthejaws, the roller e moves up the slot d, when it reaches the top, limits the closingr of the jaws. It will readily be seen that if a nut bc clasped by tlien'rencl1, sayin its open condition, shown, in iig, 3, and the sta' be pulled in the direction of arrow, g, (shown in said figure) that the jaws C and-D will not only close upon a nut, bar, or other body, but that the harder'the lpull, they harderwill be the grip of the jaws C and D. In my modification referred to, illustrated inl figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8, instead fof the slot in the stadt B, I have a slot in each of the lugs, (corresponding to those of b, in fig. 3,) and instead of a. roller, a pin, It, passing through the top pai-,t of the staf'passes through the lugs on each side, and plays up and down in the slots ofthese lngs, the jaws operaing similarly to those before described. One jaw is also pivoted to upper part of sta, by pin f.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-'- v y Y y The combination of the jaws C D, stati` B, and roller le,-constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner Substantially as shown and described, and furthe pnrposeset forth'.
' PHILIP SQMMER.
