Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1908.
Application filed October 30, 1907. Serial No. 399,845.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE LAoHnZE, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in Dijon, in said Republic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and aims to im rove the form of wrench described in Letters atent No. 841,986, granted to me under date of January 22, 1907. In said patent there is described a wrench having a jaw rotatable on the shank, but fixed against movement along the shank by means comprising a pin entering a groove in the end of the shank. This invention aims to do away with the pin and groove mentioned and provide a more simple and durable construction of mounting for what is termed the fixed jaw.
With this end in view the invention consists in a wrench having the novel features to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, in which the same reference characters denote the same parts throughout, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a wrench with jaws of modified form.
In the drawin the threaded shank is shown as provide with a smooth portion 2 near its outer end, said portion being of greater diameter than the threaded portion, as in the patent referred to, and at its extreme end provided with a rounded-off head 2 corres onding somewhat with the cylindrical e argement of my patented wrench.
The jaw 1, which is to be rotatably mounted on the shank but fixed a ainst movement longitudinally thereof, is suitably bored out to receive the parts 2, 2, so that said jaw is rotatably mounted on the head of the shank. The jaw is permanently fixed on the shank by closing in the metal of the jaw which surrounds the opening made for the head 2, as shown at 1. This closing in of the metal is effected by pounding down the upper edge of the shank opening, so that the metal will extend over the rounded-off head to a certain extent. In this manner the jaw 1 is fixed against movement longitudinally of the shank, but the rotation of said aw is permitted. l/Vhen the wrench is used to tighten or loosen nuts, the strain received by the fixed jaw is transmitted to the shank by the shoulder 3 at the junction of the parts 2,
In the form of wrench shown in Fig. 1 the jaws have fiat portions 4, 5 extending to one side of the shank and recessed portions 6, 7 extending to the other side, said latter portions forming box jaws. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the aws are recessed at both sides of the shank so as to form box jaws.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A wrench comprising a threaded shank having a smooth portion at one end. and a rounded-off head adjacent said smooth portion, and jaws on said shank, one of which has an opening fitting over said head and said smooth portion, the metal of said jaw surrounding said opening being closed in so as to overhang the head and thereby permanently retain said jaw on the shank, though permitting its free rotation thereon.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMILE LACHEZE.
