UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. BEERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GOLFHOSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,656, dated November 8, 1898.
Application filed April 9, 1897. Serial No. 631,351. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BEERS, a citi zen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf-Hose and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates t0 golf-hose of the footless type, the objects being to secure a neat and comfortable fit, to prevent pressure under the foot and around the heel, to conform the lower portion to the shape of the foot, and to enable high or low shoesbeing worn without exposing the lower edge portion of the hose bordering upon the omitted heel and instep portions.
The improvement consists in a gusset at each side of the hose at a medial point to give shape to the instep and heel and in the strap which is located about centrally and secured to the heel and gusset, the upper portion of the strap widening toward the heel or back to prevent the heel from creeping up when low shoes are worn.
The improvement also consists. of the novel features, which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed. e
In the drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a footless golfhose constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the foot portion on a larger scale.
Corresponding and like parts are indicated in both views of the drawings and referred to in the following description by the same reference characters.
The golf-hose may be seamless or manufactured in any of the ways resorted to for constructing knitted goods and are preferably knit, the upper part being of usual form to conform tothe outline of the leg. The hose l illustrated is footless. Its portion is turned at 2 to present the ordinary finish. A gusset 3 is provided at each side and gives' the required shape to the heel and instep portions of the hose. This gusset is formed when knitting the hose, and the lines of stitches extend at an obtuse angle to the lines of stitches forming the heel and parallel the instep, whereby the latter is given the requisite shape. The rear edge of the gusset from a to t is straight and its lower edge from b to e is curved and the third edge from a to e is nearly straight and parallel with the lines of stitches. The edge of the heel from c to b is straight and the edge of the instep from e to d is curved. The strap 4 has its front edge slightly curved and its rear edge oppositely curved and inclines rearwardly, so that the middle point of its lower edge cornes about in line with the rear edge of the gusset. the line ct b and is secured to the gusset and the heel.
A golf-hose constructed as herein set forth conforms to the shape of the foot and secures ease and comfort to the wearer, fits neatly, distributes the pressure equally, prevents the strap drawing on the sole of the foot, and can be -worn equally well with high or low shoes.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new,and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, ise-- v A footless golf-hose comprising an instep and a heel portion open at its lower end, an independent gusset at each side of the hose intermediate of the heel and instep portions and throwing the said instep portion forward to conform to the corresponding part of the foot, the lower edges of the gussets, heel and instep portions being in the same curved line, and a centrally-disposed strap having its ends overlapping the juncture formed between the heel and gussets and connected therewith, and having its lower portion inclining upwardly and rearwardly, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE E. BEERS.
Witnesses JAMES H. ROBERTSON, VAnDIvEEE B. MoLEE.
