UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAlWI THOMAS BROWN, OF JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS.
PIANO-STOO L.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent N 0. 611,891, dated October 4, 1898.
Application filedDecember 20,1897. Serial No. 662,596. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM THOMAS BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Stools and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to duplex piano-stools; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same, whereby the stool may be used for a single person or when desired may be extended to accommodatetwo persons.
The invention consists, essentially, in an open rectangular frame comprising horizontal side rails connected together by transverse end rails and supported by four legs, the said side rails being provided with beveled cleats, a grooved slide engaging with said cleats, a fixed seat secured to said slide, and a folding seat hinged to said fixed seat, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a piano-stool constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown as used as a single-seat stool. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section as when'in use as a double or duplex stool.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a frame comprising the side rails 2 of the stool, connected together by end rails inner sides of the side rails are cleats 5, beveled from the upper to the lower ends, as seen in Fig. 2. Engaging with these cleats is a correspondingly-beveled slide 6,which is capable of moving horizontally in said frame. Secured to this slide is a seat 7, to which is hinged a supplemental seat 8.
In practice when the stool is used as a single-seat stool the slide will be moved to one end of the frame, so that the seat fixed thereto will rest upon the-same, and the folding seat turned over upon the fixed seat, as shown in Fig. 1. To convert the stool into a duplex or double seat one, the slide is moved toward the center of the frame and the seat 8 turned outward or unfolded, so as to occupy the position shown in Fig. 3,whereby two persons may occupy the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with the frame comprising the side and end rails and the legs, of the beveled cleats secured to the side rails, the slide having beveled sides engaging with said cleats, the seat fixed to said slide and the folding seat hinged to said fixed seat, the construction being such that the stool may be converted from a single to a double seat, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM THOMAS BROWN.
