COMBINATION=TDOL..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,825, dated September 13, 1898.
Application filed July 12, 1897- Serial No. 644,235. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADDIEL F. OLSEN, of Knowlton, in the county of Custer and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to combination-tools; and its object is to provide an improved form of combination-tool which shall be especially adapted for docking and castrating sheep.
M y invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a perspective view of my device.
My device is made in theform of a pair of pliers, one member of which carries a fixed set of jaws, while the remaining member carries what maybe considered a movable set of jaws.
The numeral 1 indicates what I prefer to call the fixed member. A socket 2, having an opening 3 therethrough, is formed upon the handle of said member. A knife-blade 4 is securely fastened thereto, and I prefer to make said knife-blade detachable, both for convenience in manufacture and for ease in sharpening. An expanded portion 4 is formed immediately to the rear of said knife-blade and separating the blade portion from the Holders 5 are formed upon each side of said expanded portion for the purposes hereinafter to be described. The movable member 6 is provided with a similar expanded portion 7, held to rotatein the expanded portion of the fixed member by a bolt 8. Similar holders 9 are also provided thereon. Dies 10 are held in the holders 5, and punches 11 are held in' the holders 9, and by the movement of the members said punches are adapted to coact with said dies and remove a portion of any material that maybe placed therebetween. Iuse this portion of my device for marking the ears of sheep or other animals, and I prefer em ploying upon one pair of said holders a die and punch in the shape of a numeral and upon the opposing pair of holders a die and punch in the shape of a letter, though this may be varied at pleasure. The movable member is provided with a blade 12, against which the blade 4 on the fixed member is adapted to act, thus forming a pair of shears. This portion of my device I use for cutting the tails from sheep or other animals, and also use itin castrating for removing the lower portion of the scrotum. The movable member is preferably formed with a groove 13 on the inside thereof. A pair of pincers 14 are pivotally mounted in the socket portion 2 of the fixed member and are provided with extended portions 15, having friction-wheels 16 at the ends, which are adapted to move in the groove in the movable member. Suitable springs 17 serve to hold said wheels in contact with the movable member and to open said pincers after the same have been closed. A smaller pair of pincers are provided on the ends of the handles 1 and 6. These two pair of pincers are used in the operation of castrating. After the end of the scrotum has been cut with the shears the end of the large pair of pincers is inserted therein and the testicle grasped and withdrawn. The smaller pair of pincers may then be used to remove such portions of the spermatic cord as desired. I thus provide a simple device for the purpose indicated which combines within itself all the necessary tools to perform these operations upon sheep. It is also evident that this device may be made in other sizes and may be equally used for castrating the larger animals.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An implement of the character described, comprising a pair of pivoted handles, a pair of pincers on one of said handles, consisting of pivoted members provided with extended portions adapted to bear against the other of said handles, and springs for urging said extended portions outwardly and for opening said handles.
2. An implement of the character described,
comprising a pair of pivoted handles, one of which is provided with a longitudinal groove, and a pair of pincers on the other of said handles, consisting of pivoted members provided with extended portions whose-ends are adapted to fit and move Within said groove.
3. An implement of the character described, comprising a pair of pivoted handles, one of which is provided with a longitudinal groove, a pair of pincers on the other of said handles consisting of pivoted members provided with extended portions, Whose ends are adapted to fit and move within said groove, and springs for normally urging said extended portions outwardly and'for opening said handles, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. An implement of the character described, comprising a pair of pivoted handles, one of which is provided with a longitudinal groove, a pair of pincers on the other of said handles, consisting of pivoted members provided with extended portions, friction-wheels in the ends of said extended portions adapted to fit and move within said groove, and springs for urging said extended portions outwardly, holding said friction-wheels in said groove, and for opening said handles.
5. An implement of the character described, comprising a pair of pivoted handles, one of which is provided with a longitudinal groove,
and the other with a socket, a pair of pincers extending through said socket, and consisting of pivoted members provided with extended portions whose ends are adapted to fit and move within said groove, and springs for urging said extended portions outwardly and for opening said handles, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a combined docking and castrating device, the combination with a pair of shears. having an opening through one of the handles thereof, of a pair of pincers pivot-ally mounted in said opening provided with ends 0 flaring outwardly therefrom and resting upon the opposite handle of said shears, and a pair of pincers held upon the ends thereof one member of which is adjustable.
7. In a combined docking and castrating device, comprising two members pivotally joined, a blade carried upon one of said members, a blade formed upon the opposing members, holders held upon said members, dies adapted to be contained in one of said holders, punches adapted to be contained in the opposing holders, a pair of pincers pivotally mounted upon the handle of one of said members and provided with outwardly-extending ends, rollers held to rotate on said outwardly- 5 5 extending ends, springs adapted to normally press said ends against the handle of the opposing member, a pincer member formed upon the extremity of one of said handles, and an adjustable pincer member carried upon the op- ADDIEL F.
