'WILLIAM PHILLIPS, ()F ASHLAND, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NOBLE R. GREGORY, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 245,398, dated August 9, 1881. I Application filed May 7, 1881. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland,--in the county of Saunders, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Tools, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of a portion of the opposite side thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of the inner face of one of the jaws.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- 1 sponding parts in the several figures,
My invention consists of a combined tool embodying a wrench, wire-cutter, wire-twister, bolt-holder, nail-puller, hammer, an additional wrench, and a screw-driver, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent two jaws, which are pivoted together and formed with handles A, after the manner of a pair of pinchers. The outer ends of the jaws are separated, and their inner faces are flattenedin the direction of the length of the tool, thus forming a wrench, 13, especially adapted for carriages, &c., as it occupies a position most convenient for engagement with a nut,
0 bolt, &c., and may be operated with great leverage. This wrench B is open at the end of the tool when the jaws are closed together, and it flares inward. It is therefore adapted to hold nuts or other articles of varying size or irreg- 5 ular shape, and nuts or articles grasped by it may be inserted through the side of the wrench or at its end, according to convenience. At the base of the wrench each jaw has an inwardlyprojecting flange, O, forming a clip or twister 40 for wire, 850., and to the sides of the jaws, below said flange O, are connected blades, D, forming cutters for wires, &c. The jaws are cut away below the flange G and form a wrench, 13.
From one jaw, A, projects a hammer-head,
5 E, and from each jaw, opposite to said head,
are horizontally-extendin g jaws F F, for grasping bolts, &c., the outer ends of the jaws extending toward each other, as at G, forming a nail-puller.
A portion of the inner face of the tool, between the handles A and pivot of the jaws, is cut away, as at B, thus forming an additional wrench, it being noticed that theseveral wrenches are adapted for nuts, bolts, 850, of different sizes. 5 5
The end ofone of the handles A is extended. inwardly and outwardly to form a screw-driver,
H, whose edge is at or about the center of the tool.
It will be noticed that every implement is operated from the handles A, and so disposed that the operation is most effective.
The blades D may be fitted to the jaws by dovetailed or other joints, so as to be removed for purposes of sharpening, &c., and afterward conveniently applied, it being noticed that, eX- cepting said blades D, all parts of each jaw are formed of one piece of suitable metal.
The jaw A is swelled at G, forming a heel for the nail-puller G and serving as a tack or 0 other hammer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Thejaws A A and their handles A A, pivoted together, as shown, said jaws being recessed in their sides between the main wrench and the pivot, toform supplemental wrench B.
2. A combination-tool consisting of two parts pivoted together, one of said parts consisting of a handle, A,'a jaw A, flange G, and a downwardly-curved lateral jaw, F, and the other part consisting of a jaw, A, screw-driver H, hammer E, handle A, upwardly-curved jaw F, and flange O, substantially as set fort-h. 8
WILLIAM PHILLIPS.
