Be it known that I, CHLOE E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springiield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk- Trays; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to trunk-trays.
My object is to provide a simple and cheap tray for trunks which will be adjustable, so that it may be madeof `the required size tol fit any trunk and will be provided with im-V packed therein against displacement, so that they may be kept smooth and in order.
The invention consists of certain details of construction and combinations of parts appearing more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a plan view of my improved packing-tray, one of the locking-straps being shown unfastened; Fig. 2, a cross section; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a detail view showing the lock for the strips of the frame of t-he tray.
I will first describe the adjustable frame. Each side and end of this frame consists Of two pieces l and 2, each of which is cutaway longitudinally, as at 3, and the outer strip 2 is provided with a series of openings 4. Metal guide-straps 5 and 6, connected to the respective strips, are the means whereby the latter are allowed to slide upon each other without separation. In strip l there is located an apof openings in strip 2, and 8 designates a l and is provided with a bent or hooked end 9, which is normally pressed through opening 7 and adapted for reception in one of the openings in strip 2. Thus it will be seen that the whole frame oanbe adjusted both 4longitudinally and transversely and looked at any desired point, s o that it will be adapted to iit a trunk of any dimensions.
I provide a series of longitudinally-extending straps or bands which are located in parallel relation and have their ends looped saisine. 602,602. (Nomina when the frame is adjusted longitudinally the straps or bands are first let out and then tightened up after adjustment has been obtained, so that a proper bottom will be formed for the tray. The numerals 14C designate the transverselycxtendingstraps, which are connected to the outer side strips of the frame in the manner before described, and comprise two pieces which are connected by a buckle. These strips Or bands l shall designate Flocking-straps,` as they are the ones which are fastened over the garments so as to hold them rmly against the bottom straps and keep them in VOrder against displacement.
My imprOvedpacking-tray can be varied in many ways without materially detracting from any of its advantages, and hence I consider myself entitled to all such changes as are properly embraced by my invention. As many trays can be used invone trunk as desirable. j
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An extensible receptacle-tray for trunks, consisting of sides and ends extensible in the direction of their length, means for securing the same when extended, and an extensible bottom for the tray extending across in the plane of the lower edges of said sides and ends, and consisting of strips arranged in pairs and having their outer ends secured to the tray and provided at their inner ends with means whereby they may be adj ustably connected, substantially as described.
