BROOM-CLAN! P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. S,'773, dated August 9, 1898.
Application filed February 21, 1898. Serial No. 671,149. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HIETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland, in the county of Jackson and State of Ten nessee, have invented a newand useful Broom- Clamp, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to blQQmrQ ailllpS, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient construction, combination, and arrangement of parts wherebya broom may be manufactured ata small cost, primarily, by reason of utilizing the complete broom-corn stalks andalso by reason of the facility with which the broom-corn may be arranged in operative position.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a construction of broom-clamp as to facilitate the refilling thereof either by the consumer or others of moderate skill and also to provide a clamp adapted for engaging the broom-corn in such a manner as to give an increased sweep or operative length of broom-corn, whereby the efficiency of the broom is increased.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a broom embodying a clamp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the clamp and handle with the broom-corn omitted.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawmgs.
1 designates a handle having a transverselyflattened extension or tongue 2, which projects axially into the broom-head, consisting of the broom-corn 3. This flattened portion or tongue is provided contiguous to its up per and lower ends with openings through which extend upper and lower clamp-bolts i and 5, forming parts of clamp members, each of which consists of a side plate 6, having terminal arms 7, and a cooperating or adj ustable side plate 8, having bifurcated extremities 9 for slidably engaging reduced portions 10 of said terminal arms. H The clampbolt-s extend through openings in said clampplates in registration with the openings in the extension or tongue of the handle, with their heads in contact with one of the clampplates of each member, and are fitted with wing-nuts 11, whereby the clamp-plates may be adjusted toward each other to clamp the broom-corn.
f The clamp members are of different lengths, the upper one being short and designed to engage the butts of the broom-corn stalks, while the" lower L one is longer to insure the proper width of the broom-head at its lower case of looseness the thumb-nuts may be tightened at any time to apply the desired pressure to the broom-command thus maintain the stalks thereof in their proper positions.
- An advantage of the above-described construction resides in the fact that common means, consisting of the clamp-bolts 4: and 5 and the wing-nuts 11, are employed for adfjustably connecting the plates or members of the upper and lower clamps and for securing -the same to the broom-handle extension, whereby the disengagement of the wingnuts from said bolts disconnects the clamp members not only from each other, but from the broom-handle extension.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I V claim is 1. The combination of abroom-handle, and upper and lower spaced clamp members, each having relatively-adjustable side plates, and common means for adj 'ustably connecting said plates and securin g the same to an extension of said broom-handle, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a broom-handle provided with upper and lower spaced transverse openings, and clamp members each having parallel side plates, and adjusting devices consisting of bolts extending through the transverse openings of the handle and registering openings in said side plates, and fitted with adjusting-nuts, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of abroom-handle having upper and lower spaced transverse openings, and upper and lower clamp members each consisting of a side plate provided with terminal upturned armshaving guides, and a removable side plate terminally bifurcated to fit said guides, adjusting bolts extending through said openings in the handle and registering openings in the side plates, and adjusting-nuts fitted upon said bolts, substan-. tially as specified.
4. A broom having a handle provided with a transversely-flattened extension or tongue provided with spaced upper and lower transverse openings, upper and lower clamp members, each consisting of a side plate having terminal upturned arms, a removable side plate terminally guided upon the arms of the first-named side plate, and an adjusting-bolt extending through one of the openings in the transversely-flattened extension of the handle and through registering openings in said side plates, and fitted with a win g-nut, and broomcorn arranged between the side plates of the clamp members, with the butts of the broomoorn stalks engaged by the upper clamp member, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HIETT.
