TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:

Be it known that I, EVEN` KOOS, of Funkstown, in the county of Washington, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful improvement inl Tuyeres or Fire-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereoreference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention consists in a swinging or hinged plug or valve for regulating thev blast through a tuyere or fire-iron, land also in a new arrangement for opening and loosening the box or air-chamber below the t'uyere. In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved tuyere.

Figure 2 is a' vertical section of the same.

The general construction of my tuyere or fire-iron may be the same as that already patented by me. But instead of using the conical plug described in that patent, I propose to cast the upper face of the tuyere in one piece,.with two sets of openings, Artaud B, as seen in iig. 1. In the upper part of the air-chamber I have arranged a swinging plug or valve, i0, fig. 2, so hinged that it may swing down, as seen in red lines. This valve is moved by means of a jointed wirler rod, D, provided with a knob, H. When the valve is up it closes the outer openings in the face of the tuyere, as seen in g. 2, whilst the diminished blast passes through the hollow I centre C of the plug, and when down there is a full blast. The cap E is made removable, in order to facilitate the clearing of the air-chamber GrV of einders, ashes, and other matter which is liable to fall through the air openings A B. The form of the above-described devices may be somewhat varied without departing from my invention, so long as the result is substantially the same. I do not broadly claim a swinging valve in the air-chamber, but confine my claims to such valve when used to close air-passages in the top of the chamber.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire te secure byLetters Patent of the United States, isf-- 1. In combination with blast openings in the bed of a forge or furnace, I claim the above-described swinging valve oroplug, constructed and operated substantially as set forth.

n 2. I claim the combination of the cap E, rod D, and hinged valve or plug C, constructed substantially as specified.
