IMPROVEMENT IN TUYERBS.

TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN: Y i l ,A Beit known that'I, CHARLES C. FonNcRooK, of Hermitage, in' the county of Wyoming, and State of -New l York, have invented a certain new und useful Improvement in Tuyeres oflacksmiths Forges and I do hereby declare' that the following is afull und exact description thereof, reference being had 4to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which-L- A Figure -1 is u longitudinal vertical section of my improvement.
Figure 2, a plan ofthe valve-chamber with the capf removed.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures,
Blaclisiniths'L bellows, as commonly constructed, have their valves in the under side, which remain 'closed while the bellows are arrest, and, consequently, leave no access for the air to the fire, which soon expires, es'peciallywhcn anthracite coal is used. l Y
, It is the object of my invention to furnish-asupply of air to the -lre when the bellows are-at rest, to keep it alive, und thereby prventthe inconvenience of relighting it, which is so'often required, and which occasionssuch a loss of time, with the ordinary method of construction. y I .v In the drawings, A represents the tuyere or nozzle cfa pair of bellows; B, a valve-chamber on the upper' side of the pipe, and communicating with the latter by a short'tube, c, or in' any other suitable manner. This chamber may be of any required construction, und i'sprovided with a suitable valve, d, lwhich willremain open when the. bellows are at rest, or when there is no pressure of air fromiwithin, to permit the unobstructed entrance of the air, and that will close when the bellows are in operation to prevent the escapeof the air. i The valve Z is provided with a. stem, e, loosely fitting in u. bridgeg, which is arranged in the chamber B, so asto be adjusted higher or lower by sliding therein, und'thereby regulate the 'play of the valve, and consequently the amount of air admitted. i
By the use of myimprovement 4I have been enabled-.to keep alive for several 'hours a lr'ethat would become extinct in aifew minutes when the aperture of theA valve was closed. It is desirable that the vulve be arranged l as near the end of the tuyere as practicable, as the draught to 'the fire is in .proportion tothe proximity of the valve. v What I claim as my invention, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, isrh The combination of the valve d, adjustable bridge g, chamber B, and tuyereA, arranged'snd operating suhstantially inthe mannerand for the purpose set forth. I
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of twosubscribing witnesses.
' CHARLES C. FORNCROOK.
