BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 607,188, dated July 12, 1898.
Application filed June 26, 1897- Serial No. 642,411. (No modeh) T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MCDONALD, of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a boot orshoe embodying my invention. Fig.2is a front elevation of the breast of my improved detachable combined heel and heel-coupler. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the heel part of the boot or shoe combined with my improved removable heel by means of a coupler permanently fixed to the heel. Fig. 4: is a top plan view of the preferred form of coupler detached.
My invention is an improvement upon the detachable heel described in my pending application, Serial No. 626,304, filed March 6, 1897; and the object of my invention is to produce boots and shoes and other articles of foot-gear, the heels of which may be fastened in place by means of a suitable vcoupler permanently attached to the heel, the heel being preferably of rubber or other elastic composition.
In the drawings, illustrating my invention in the best way now known to me, A represents a boot, shoe, or other article of footgear, a the sole, and a the heel. The coupler B may be made in'various forms without de parture from my invention, but in this preferred form is a light metallic casting having an upper inwardly-turned lip Z). This coupler B is provided below its upper edge with some suitably-formed part, upon which the heel a is permanently secured, preferably by molding the heel of rubber or rubber compound both without and within the lowermost portion of the coupler. Preferably the couplerB is formed at its said lowermost portion with an inward projection 12' at its rear portion and is shaped inwardly from said rear portion to its front end portions 1) 11 where the coupler is preferably provided with inward extensions b b which pass across the breast of the heel. The inner ends of these inward extensions b are secured together by any suitable device-for example, by the screw b 'are much desired by policemen, militiamen,
motormen, and others.
Vhat I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, a detachable boot or shoe heel made up of an elastic heel and a metallic coupler provided with a clamping mechanism; the coupler being formed at its upper part with an inturned, sole-gripping lip, and, at its under part, with an inclined lip, and the heel being molded 011 the inclined lip with a sole-edge-receiving space between its upper surface and the under surface of the sole-gripping lip.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, 011 this 11th da of June, A. D. 1897.
FRANK MCDONALD.
