SHOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 2,1912.
Application iilel January 30, 1911. Serial No. 605,347.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. CLARK, of Allston, in the county of Suffolk and State ot' l/lassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a speeitieation, reference. heilig had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shoes, more partienlarly to that class of shoes in which an outwardly turned welt on the upper is stitched to the sole, and has for an object to provide a Shoe of such class with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth to strengthen the heel portion of the shoe.
The invention also consists in such other novel features of construction and combination ot parts as shall hereinafter be more `fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l, represents a side elevation of the improved shoe. Fig. 2, represents a sectional view of parts of the same taken on line 2 2 Fig. l. Fig. 3, represents an edge view of the combined counter and foxing piece. Fig. 4l, represents a sectional view thereof as on line 4 4 F 3, the welt portion thereof being turned outward. Fig. 5, represents a plan view of the improved counter. Fig. (5, represents a sectional View thereof taken on line 6*(5 Fig. 5 and showing the skiving` ot' the welt portion ot said Counter.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In carrying this invention into practice I take a counter piece approximately of the shape, shown in plan `in Fig. 5 and identified in the other figures of the. drawing b v the numeral 7.' This counter "'iieee 7 is skived along the lower edge 8, and on that surface ot the counter piece. which bears against the adjacent; portions of the upper in the Hnished shoe, thereby forming the channel 9 having its surface inclined from edge 9 to the shoulder l0 on which shoulder the material of reduced thickness can be bent while the edge S retains its original thickness. To the Central portion of the face 7 of this counter piece 7 I secure by sewing or by een'ienting the foxing piece ll approximately of the shape of the counter piece '7 and sufficiently iiexible to be bent outward to forni the welt extension l2. I now take the heel portions 13-13 of the shoe upper 14 and insert the saine between the counter piece 7 and the foxing piece ll and stitch the whole together as is shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawing. The lower portions of the upper are now turned outward to forni the welt 15 and this welt 15 and also the welt formed by the vcombined counter welt 8 and foxing welt 12 is sewed to the sole` 1G. By this construction I axn able to produce a shoe of extreme flexibility while the heel. portion is strong and durable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
l. A shoe eoinprisng a heel counter having the marginal portion of its outer face at the bottom thereof skived inwardly at an in.
clination to provide a shoulder positioned inwardly of the lower edge of the counter, that portion ot the counter below said shoulder bent outwardly to provide a welt, the outer edge of said welt having its original thickness, a foxing piece having its lower portion bent outwardly to provide a welt, the central portion of said foxing piece secured to the central portion of said counter, an upper provided with a welt, the heel portions of said upper extending between the counter and the foxing piece and with the welt ot' the upper positioned between the welt of the foxing piece and the welt of the counter, and means for securing the welts togetl'ler.
2. A shoe comprising a counter piece having the lower marginal portion thereof bent outwardly to provide a welt, a foxing piece positioned against the outer face of the counter piece and having the lower marginal portion bent outwardly to provide a welt, the intermediate portion of said foxing piece being secured to the intermediate Welt of the foxing piece, means for securing portion of said counter piece, andan upper the upper and the said pieces together, and provided with a welt, the heel portions of means for securn@- the said Welts together. 10 said upper extending between said counter e EORGE H. CLARK. 5 piece and said oXng piece and the Welt at Witnesses:
the heel portions of said upper extending be- H. J. MILLER, tween the welt of the counter piece and the H. E. MORTON.
