SKIRT-PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,876, dated July 5, 189.8. Application filed February 23,1898. Serial No. 671,219. (Specimens.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN BAPTISTE PovET, a citizen of France, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improve- A ment in Skirt-Protectors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a skirt-protector having a brush edge, the same being formed with means independent of and within said brush for flaring or spreading the same later.- ally, so as to present an enlarged or widened surface for contact with the iioor, pavement, dac.

Figure 1 represents a face view of a piece of skirt-protector embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof on line a: w, Fig. 1. piece of fabric as a blank from which said protector is made. Fig. t represents a section thereof on line y y.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates ak piece of a skirt-protector, the same being formed of the head B, the brush C, and an auxiliary fabric, as at D, within said brush adjacent to the head, said fabric serving to separate the brush from within and throw out or iare the opposite sides of the brush, thus spreading the brush so that it presents a widened or enlarged surface to the iioor, pavement, ground, &c.

In carrying out my invention I employ warpthreads E, weft-threads F, and weave the two heads G, and iioating'portions of saidweftthreads E from one head to the other, as at H.

Fig. 3 represents a face View of a` `auxiliary fabric D, which are thus connected Y with the heads G and concealedby the main portions of the floated warp-threads. The fabric as produced is then cutthrough in the direction of the length thereof at or about the center of the floated Aweft-threads between the rows of auxiliary fabric D, thus producing two pieces, each composed of the head B,

'p the brush Q, and the interior auxiliary fabric D, the latter causing the two side portions of the length of said brush to flare or spread, as has been stated, all parts of the complete fabric being united as one.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A skirt-protector consisting of a head, a brush thereon, and an auxiliary fabric within said brush adjacent to saidhead.

2. In a skirt-protector, a brush having therein means independent of and within the brush for spreading or flaring the same lat erally. v
