Description

July 3, 1923 BUTTON Filed Aug. 24. 1921 Patented July 3, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.4
JOSEPH P. BOWLES, OF WEST NEW BRIGHTON, NEW YORK.
BUTTON.
Application tiled August 24, 1921. Serial No. 494,38.
T o all whom t may concer-n Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. BowLns, a citizen of the United States, residing in West New Brighton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a speciication.
- My present invention relates to improvements in buttons, and the main object of the invention is to provide button which ,v is readily secured in place on a garment or article by needle and thread, the needle when inserted from the rear, or cloth side, of the button being always directed to a thread hole of the button for passing readily therethrough in the course of sewing the button on.
A feature of the invention is the provision of directing faces or guide faces in the button, so arranged that the point of the needle will contact obliquely therewith when the needle is inserted from the rear, or cloth side, whereby the needle is directed to a thread hole of the button.
Another feature is the provision of a cupped portion, or bell mouth portion, in the rear, or cloth side, of the button, for receivthe button to stand od' or be raised fromv the surface of the cloth or article. Whereas by providing the cupped or bell mouth portion this massed thread will instead pack into said cupped or bell-mouth portion and permit the rear, or cloth side, or base of the button to lie Hat or snug on the surface of the cloth.
In the accompanying drawings l which show one embodiment of my invention, and which form part of this specification, Fig` ure 1 is a top or face View.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Figure 3 is a rear or cloth side view.
Similar reference characters denote similar parts throughout the several views.
yMy button, which is made'of any suitable line .composition or material, is provided with a front or outer side A, which, as shown, is sunken, but is not necessarily so, and a rear or cloth side B.
A plurality of thread holes, such as'10, pass through the front face A of the button, The button has an interior chamber C which on the rear or cloth side B of the button is provided with a cupped or bell mouth portion 11 of greater diameter than said chamber for receiving or packing therein the thread7to permit the button to lie Hush with the cloth. The bell mouth portion 11 of said chamber has outwardly curving sides or faces 12 which extend into said chamber towards the front side of the button and merge in the thread holes 10, the intention being to provide deflecting faces which in the event of contact therewith of the needle N, when inserted from the cloth side of the button near the sides -12, vwill deflect or direct the needle to a thread hole 10 without tendency of the needle to stick or catch in the sides.
The thread holes 10 are off-set radially from a teat or projection 13, round in crosssection, having its base located in the line of the axis of the ybutton adjacent to the face portion A, and its stem extending rearwardly into the chamber C and surrounded thereby, the sides or faces 14 of the'teat curvin inwardly and merging in a bluntly rounded point 15 which terminates substantially at the upperline of the cuppedor bell mouth portion 11, the intention being to provide a delecting end and deflectin'g lfaces for the teat with which, in the event of the needle N contacting therewith when inserted from the cloth side of the button near the center of the bell mouth portion 11, will deflect or direct the needle to a thread hole 10 withen l out tendency of the needle to stick or catch in the point or sides of the teat.
The ribs 16, Fig. 3, extend from the teat or projection 13 at right angles to the ax'is of the teat. The ribs 16 at their inner edges extend longitudinally of the teat 13 from the base thereof to near the oint 15, and at their outer ed es extend ongitudinally of y the chamber and merge in the sides of the bell mouth portion 11, the ribs 16 provid-ing partitioning walls which form with adjacent portions of the curving sides 12 segmental guiding areas -or chambers 17, each of which is appurtenant to a thread hole 10 for conning the needle when inserted from the rear side of the button to such area or chamber and directmg 1t to the 'thread hole appurtenant to the chamber.
Having thus described my invention it should be understood that there may be modifications thereof and variations therein without departing from the spirit of `the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A button com rising, a front side with thread holes theret rough, a rear side, an interior chamber having an outwardly flaring mouth on the lrear side of the button with deecting side faces extending into said chamber and merging in the thread holes, and a teat surrounded my said chamber having its base at the front side of the button and its stem extending into said chamber and having deecting side faces terminating in a dedecting point; the thread holes being o-set radially from the base of said teat; the deecting side faces of said bell mouth and chamber and the delecting point and delecting side faces of the teat serving to direct the needle to a thread hole.
2. A button comprising, a front side with thread holes therethrough, a rear side, an
interior chamber having a bell mouth portion of greater diameter than the chamber,
the bell mouth portion ,having outwardly curving side faces extending into said chamber and merging in the thread holes, and a teat round in cross-section surrounded by said chamber having its Vbase at the front side of the botton and its stem extendinginto said chamber and having inwardly curving side faces terminating in a bluntly rounded point; the thread holes being 0E- set radially from the base of said teat;4 the curving side faces of said bell mouth portion and chamber and the bluntly rounded ointand curving side faces ofthe teat servmg to direct the needle to a thread hole.
3.' A button comprising, a front side with thread holes therethrough, a rear side, an interior chamber having a bell mouth portion withdeilectingside faces extending into said chamber and merging in the thread raeaeao holes, a teat surrounded by said chamber having its base Aat the front side of the button and lts stem extending into said chamber and having deflecting side faces terminating i chambers serving to confine the needle thereto when inserted from the rear. side of the button and directit to a thread hole.
4. A button com rising, a front side with thread holes theret rough, a rear side, an interior chamber having a bell mouth portion of greater diameter than the chamber, the bell mouth portion having outwardly curving side faces extending into said chamber and merging in the thread holes, a' teat round in cross-section surrounded by said chamber having its base at the front side of the button and its stem extending into said chamber and having inwardly curving side faces terminating in a bluntly rounded point, and partitioning ribs arranged at rlght angles to the axis of the teat and eri-p4 A tending longitudinally of the teat and said chamber and forming with adjacent side portions of said chamber segmental chambers appurtenant to the thread holes; the thread holes being oE-set radially from the base of said teat; the curving side faces ofy said bell mouth portion and chamber and the bluntly roundedr oint and curving side faces of the teat serving to direct the needle to a thread hole; and said segmental chambers serving to confine the needle thereto when inserted from the rear -side of the button and directit to a thread hole.
