SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,111, dated June 21, 1898.

Be it known that I, ARTHUR N. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chanute, in the county ofNeosho and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful 7 Improvements inlvlueilage- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to holders or receptacles for m ucilage or other viscous matter; and the object is to provide a construction of cover portion for such a device which will provide effective Wiping means for the brush used in applying the viscous matter, said wiping means coming into play as the brush is extracted, so that the amount of matter taken out by the brush can be properly limited, the construction of this cover portion also providing for effectively draining any surplus matter which drops from the brush and preventing such matter becoming gummed around the opening through which the brush is extracted.

With the above object in view the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction hereinafter described and the essential elements of which are recited in the accompanying claims.

The drawings which accompany and form part of this specification illustrate a preferred form of embodiment of said invention, and of which- Figures 1 and 2 represent a complete device embodying the invention on section lines taken at right angles to each other, the brush being indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and being shown in full lines in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the device with the brush removed. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line IV IV of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows crossing said line. It will be seen that by the construction above described free access maybe had to the interior of'the holder at through the sec toral opening a and that when the brush is withdrawn charged with mucilage item be taken through the slot 0, and the edges 6 at the sides of said slot will constitute wipers to limit the amount of mucilage'retained on the brush. Moreover, the form of the surfaces around the slot on the under side ofthe web is such as to cause the surplus mucilage to flow back from the edges of the slot, so as not to become gurnmed in and around the latter. I The construction above described will be seen to be admirably adapted to fulfil the objects primarily stated; but it is evident that this construction is susceptible of variation without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention, and hence in the claims which follow I have not confined myselfto the particular form of embodiment of the invention herein disclosed. Various materials may be employed and the body and cover portion may be made in one piece, glass being preferred as the material best adapted for the purpose.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. A cover portion for mucilage-holders, having a tapering opening merging into a narrow slot and under surfaces on each side of said slot inclined downwardly and oppositely to each other as they extend away from the latter, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A cover portion for nluoilage-holders,

having a tapering opening merging into a narrow slot, upper surfaces on opposite sides of the said slot sloping downwardly toward the same, and under surfaces sloping oppositely to each other and downwardly away from the slot.

A cover portion for inncilage-holders,

of double flaring form having a tapering opening merging into a narrow slot with comparatively sharp edges, the upper surfaces around said opening and slot sloping downwardly toward the same and the under surfaces sloping downwardly away from the opening and slot on all sides thereof, substantially as described.

4. A cover portion for mucilagc-holders, comprising a cylindrical internally shouldered upper portion, a horizontal flange thereabout, a lower extension, and a web within the same having a tapering opening merging into a narrowslot and uppersurfaces sloping down to said slot and under surfaces sloping oppositely to said uppersurfaces.
