FRANCIS E. BENTON, OF STOUGHTON, MAsSAoHUsETTS.
HAN D-STRAP FOR CARS:
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,990, dated June 21, 1898.
Application filed November 19,1897. Serial No. 659,18. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. BENToN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Straps for Cars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
' The invention relates to handhold carstraps, and has for its special object to so connect the two straps by a plate-hinge and pivot-sprin g that the adjustable strap will automatically fold up behind the front stationary strap.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an elevation which clearly shows the front strap and grip-buttons; Fig. 2, a side elevation with the car-rod in section showing the two hinged plates closed together, and- Fig. 3 a detail View of the hinge with its two plates in alineinent and the spring arrangedon the pivot thereof.
In the drawings, A represents the front or short strap, and B the inner or longer one, the former being held to one plate of the hinge C by bolts, screws, or rivets, while the longer or inside one is pivotally held by an end loop-joint to the other plate.
The front strap A has the loop a, to go around the car-rod D, and the long handholdloop a, with perforations 6L2.
E represents grip-buttons, which consist of a central eyelet e and two rings 6 e, the latter being made of any suitable material and held on opposite sides of the leather by the eyelet. The buttons are arranged on the leather at such intervals that sweaty hands will not come in contact with'the leather, While they will give the hand a more certain grip. The inner strap B has a short loop I) at its upper end to joint with the loop 0 of the hinge and a long loop I).
F is a coiled spring on the pivot of the hinge, so arranged that the two plates may be pulled down by hand into alinennent and will be automatically folded up by the spring as soon as the hand-power is withdrawn.
What I claim as new is" A car-handhold consisting of two straps A B and a two-plate hinge with a coil-spring on the pivot thereof substantially as and for the purpose described. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
