Description

(No Model.)
F. LEU.
BILLIARD CUE.
No. 605,253. Patented June 7,1898
WITNESSES:
INTO/MEWS" a vertical sectional elevation thereof, taken UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK LEU, OF COLLEGE POINT, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO FELIX MAINELLA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BlLLlARD-CUE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,253, dated June '7, 1898. Application filed April so, 1897. Serial No. 634,512. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK LEU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of College Point, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cues, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in billiard-cues, the object thereof being to provide an article of this character With a detachable tip adapted for instantaneous removal and renewal after it is worn without the necessity of using glue, cement, or other adhesive substances, whereby billiard-tips can be removed with but a slight expenditure of time and labor.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in theannexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of the end of a billiard-cue. Fig. 2 is on the line a: :r of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation taken on the line y g of Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention I form in the outer end of an ordinary billiard-cue A a recess 06. Within this recess is placed a cylindrical casing B, which is provided with annular grooves b upon its outer surface, or it may be otherwise roughened for the purpose of maintaining a secure contact with the recess a. r I
The channel I) of the casing B is tapered throughout its entire length, and it engages with a tapered pin 0 of the cue-tip O. This said tip comprises a leather section 0' and a disk 0 formed of papier-mach, compressed fiber, or other similar material.
As a means for connecting the pin a to the tip C the end of said pin is provided with serrated flange c gwhich is pressed into the under surface of the fibrous disk 0 In attaching the tip to the cue it is simply necessary to drive the pin 0 within the channel or compartment 1) of the casing B until it is in tight frictional engagement therewith, and owing to the tapering shape of the said pin such engagement will be maintained during the period of practical use of the cue.
When the tip is worn out, it can be readily removed by a pair of pincers constructed with jaws adapted to clamp the disk 0 or an aperture a may be formed through the one A for registration with an aperture b leading through the casing 13,, as illustrated in the drawings. In this construction a conical. key may be used to force the pin a in an upward direction; but I do not confine myself to any specific means for releasing the tip from the cue.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, its--v A billiard-cue having a cylindrical casing mounted in the end thereof and an aperture in the side thereof, said casing having a tapering channel leading therethrough, and an aperture in the side thereof registering with the apertures in the cue,in combination with a removable tip havingva tapering pin extended therefrom for engagement with said channel,
and the apertures in the casing and cue adapted to admit the entrance of an instrument beneath the pin, substantially as shown and described. p
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of April,
FREDERICK LEU.
