END-GATE FASTENING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,894, dated May 10, 1898.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN S. COURT, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved End-Gate Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention is a fastening for end-gates, which fastening has an eyebolt or eyebolts run through the sides of the wagon-body just rearward of the end-gate and held by a vertically-extending rod which passes through eyes in the bolts and which also engages sockets formed one on each wear-plate for the eyebolts, by which sockets the rod is held steadily.

This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims de fine the actual scope of the invention.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is an end elevation of a wagonbody having my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View of one of the Wearplates, showing the adjacent portions of the eyebolt and rod. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of these devices. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of one of the wear-plates, and Fig. 5 is a plan view thereof.

The fastening may be composed of one or more eyebolts 6, which are provided at their left-hand ends with hand-rings 7 and at their right-hand ends with eyes 8. The side-boards 9 of the wagon-body are provided with vertically-elongated slots 10, through which the eyes 8 of the bolts 6 may be passed. The left-hand side-board 9 is faced by wear-plates 11, which are one for each bolt 6 and against which the hand-rings 7 respectively bear. The wear-plates 11 are provided with vertically-elongated slots corresponding with the slots 10.-

The right-hand side-board 9 is faced by wear-plates 12, which are also one for each bolt 6, and which are provided With verti cally-elongated slots 13, matching with the slots 10 in the side-board and through which the eyes 8 of the bolts 6 may be passed. The eyebolts 6 are passed through the slots 10 and through the wear-plates 11 and 12, after which the eyes 8 are turned to horizontal position, as shown in the drawings. The eyebolts are held by a vertically-extending rod 14, which is passed through the eyes 8 and through sockets 15, formed, respectively, on the plates 12 below the slots 13 and having verticallyextending inner walls, so that the rod 14 may pass vertically. The socket 15 of the lowermost plate 12 is internally threaded, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. If desired, the other socket 15 may be internally threaded; but this is not preferred, since it will make necessary threading the entire length of the rod 14. According to the preferred construction the lower extremity of the rod 14 is threaded to work in the threaded socket 15 on the lower plate 12.

My invention can be used in connections other than that shown-for example,as bridgegirder bolts and in the construction of tanks and roofs.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An end-gate fastening having a bolt pro vided at one end with a hand-ring and at the other end with an eye, two wear-plates provided with vertically-elongated slots through which the eyes of the bolts may pass, the bolt being capable of being turned to place the eye in horizontal position, and a rod running through said eye.

2. An end-gate fastening having two eyebolts, a wear-plate through which the eye of each bolt may be passed, the wear-plates havin g verticallyelongated slots therein and the bottom wear-plate having an internallythreaded socket, and a rod passed through the eyes of said bolts and having a threaded portion working in the socket.

3. An end-gate fastening having two eyebolts, a wear-plate for each eyebolt, each wear-plate having a vertically-elongated slot through which the eyes may be passed and each wear-plate also having a socket with vertically-extending interior walls, the lower socket being internally threaded, and a rod passed through the eyes and through the sockets and having its lower portion threaded to coact with the threads of the lower socket.

4. A wear-plate for endgate fastenings, having an opening or slot therein, and asocket adjacent to said opening, the socket having its interior walls extending parallel with the plane of the Wear-plate.
