J. T. SNODDY.
WAGON ENDGATR,
No. 367,676. Patented Aug. 2, 1887. v
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO JAMES TFSNODDY, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, IO\VA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE \VESTERN WHEEL SORAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WAGON END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,676, dated. August 2, 1887.
Application filed May 1l,1887. Serial No. 237,879. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES '1. SNoDnY, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and 5 useful Improvements in End-Gates for ag ons; and I do hereby declare the following to be afnll, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an in'iprovementin end-gates for wagons.
The object is to provide a simple, convent ient, and inexpensive means for securing endgates to wagon-boxes, and also for holding the sides of the box rigidly in place. 7
With these ends in view my invention coneombinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim. In theaecompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the rear end ofthe wagon-box with the end-gate partially removed therefrom. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the endgate, and Fig. is a detached view of the hinged hasp.
A A represent the sides of the wagou'box B. Rigidly secured to these sides, one preferably at the extreme end and the other suffio ciently removed therefrom to receive the endgate between them, are the vertical cleats a q, respectively, the eleat a on the side A being in this case a little thicker than the others,
' though not necessarily so.
O represents the end gatc, strengthened near the ends, andin the middle, if desired, by trans verse bars a being secured to its inner face.
the function of the former being to receive the 0 transverse side securing and supporting rod D.- This rod D is provided with a handle at one end, and at the opposite end it is screw threaded and adapted to register with the threads of the plate or washer e, the passage 5 ofsaid rod D being through perforations e in the cleats a.
To one end of the end-gate the plate or wing g of the hinge G is secured, it being sunk sufficiently so that the face of the wingg is in the sists in certain features of construction and Notches d are formed in these transverse bars,
same plane with the outer face of the end-gate and its outer edges approximately flush with the end of the gate where it terminates in pintle-soekets g,to the pintle g of which is hinged the hasp II. The hasp H terminates at its hinged edge in the ears 72, said ears preferably extending in a direct line with the hasp. A socket between these cars 71. loosely clamps the pintlesg between the sockets g. The extension I of the hasp is provided with the slot i,which receives the staple j. on the hasp in position to enter the staple over the hasp when the latter is over the staple.
From the construction it will be seen that the end-gate may be removed in two ways from the box. First, by unlocking or unlatching the fastening-hook and swinging the hasp away from the gate the latter may be withdrawn backward from the box, and,on the other hand, without-moving the hasp, by simply removing the rod the end-gate may be removed ver- 7o tically from the cleats.
It-is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, whatI i claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a wagon-box having recesses in its sides, of an endgate, transverse bars secured to the gate at or near the oppo' site ends thereof and having notches therein,a hasp hinged to one end of the gate and pro vided with an ear or cars adapted to enter one of the recesses in the box, and a rod passing through the sides of the box and resting in the notches in the transverse bars substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofI. havesigned thisspeeification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES T. SNODDY.
