UNITED STATES PATENT EEcE.
JOHN R. WILLIAMS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
KNlFE-SHARPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 602,790, dated April 19, 1898.
Application filed fieptember 22, 1897. Serial No. 652,644.. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN R. WVILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in knife-Sharpeners, its object being to provide a device of this character for household use which is simple and inexpensive in construction and effective in operation.
To the accomplishment of this end my invention consists in a knife-sharpener embodying certain novel features of construction, as will be hereinafter more. fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved knife-sharpener, illustrating its manner of use; Fig. 2 a plan view, Fig. 3 a side or edge view, and Fig. 4.- a cross-sectional view, of the same.
Like reference-numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring now more particularly to the said drawings, 1 represents my improved knifesharpener, which is constructed of two parts or members 2 3, each havinga curved handlesection 2 3, the said two handle-sections being united by a pivot-pin 4 and forming a bow-shaped handle 5.
6 represents a spring secured to said handle and serving to normally distend or spread the two sections thereof apart.
7 represents a file-blade forming an extension of the handle-section of the member 2, and 8 a file-blade forming a similar extension of the handle-section of the member 3. The blade 7 is provided at its inner end contiguous to the handle-section 2 with a broad flat space 9, serving as a thumb-piece or depressing portion, and the under side of said portion is beveled ofi outwardly and upwardly, as represented at 9, for a purpose presently described. From this point the blade is bifurcated or provided with a slot extending to the outer end thereof and forming the two oppositely-disposed parallel arms 10, which are provided on the under side or face thereof with a file-surface 10. The upper face of the blade 8 is likewise provided with a filesurface 8 and at its outer end with an upwardly-projecting lug 11, havinglateral stoppins 11. The blade 8 lies on a line between the two arms 10 of the blade 7 and is movable in the slot thereof, while said arms 10 normally incline downward and bear against the under side of the stop-pins 11.
The operation with my improved device is as follows: The blade of the knife to be sharpened is inserted transversely between the two file-blades 7 8, with its cutting edge facing toward the ends of said blades, as shown in Fig. 1, and then the file-blade 7 is depressed to bear against the knife-blade and to form the proper cutting angle with the file-blade 8, corresponding to the bevel of the cutting edge of the said knife-blade. Bynow holding the sharpener in one hand and drawing the knife-blade back and forth transversely with the other hand a cutting edge will be formed thereon by the file-blades. The novel construction of the sharpener provides for sharpening knife-blades of different widths, and the beveled surface 9 permits the filesurface of the blade 7 to be extended back close to the handle-section thereof without a smooth-surfaced portion being presented between the arms 10.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that my invention provides a knife-sharpener for household purposes which is simple and inexpensive in construction and effective in operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
1. A knife-sharpener comprising, in combination, two members, each consisting of a file-blade having a curved handle extension and one provided with a stop device against which the other is adapted to abut to hold it at an incline, said handle extensions being pivotally connected to form a bow-shaped handle, and a spring adapted to hold the. arms 10 are adapted to take, and a spring for abutting member against said stop device, normally holding said arms of the file-blade substantially as described. 7 against said stop-pins, substantially as de- 2. A knife-sharpener comprising, in combiscribed. 5 nation, two members2 3, each havingacurved In testimony whereof I affix my signature :5
