A'.S.HBLD. DETACHABLE HINGE.
Patented Mar. 8, 1898.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
AUGUST S. HELD, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE STOVER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DETACHABLE HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,263, dated March 8, 1898.
Application filed April 29. 1897. Serial No. 634,338. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST S. HELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Detachable Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in hinges, the purpose being to produce a hinge which when applied to the door will enable the same to be secured to the casing by putting said door in the proper position with respect thereto and then lowering it slightly to make the engagement.
To such end the invention consists in the combination, with a device adapted for attachment either to door or casing, of a hinge adapted for engagement with said device by putting it in proper relation thereto and moving it or the device in a vertical direction.
The preferred form of the invention is illustrated in the drawings by means of four figures, of which-- Figure l is an elevation of a complete hinge. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the parts thereof to which` the invention is applied. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the device with which the hinge is adapted for engagement, aud Fig. 4 is a section in line 4. 4 of Fig. l.
Referring to the figures, the hinge, which is lettered A, maybe of any of the well-known forms and is provided upon one leaf, which is lettered a, with a slot a in the shape of a cross, and the portion of the leaf about the slot is preferably raised sufficiently to cover a plate B, (see Fig. 3,) which is secured by means of two screws b b and has projecting forward from it a button h2, provided with a reduced shank b3 and a flat head b4. The shank h3 ts the vertical portion of the slot a', and the head b4 is small enough to pass through the horizontal portion of the slot. The face of the leaf a is provided with inclined surfaces a2, upon which the head b4 wedges when it is crowded away from the horizontal portion of the slot in either direction. (See Fig. 4.)
In the use of the hinge the face-plates B are secured to either door or casing in the proper position and the hinges secured to the other member in position to engage therewith. The leaves ct are placed over the buttons b2, the heads of the latter allowed to pass through the horizontal portions of the slots, and the door and hinges then lowered until the incline a2 crowds the leaves a against the casing or door, as the case may be. To remove the door, it is merely necessary to raise it and take it away.
The provision of a vertical slot a', extending in both directions from the horizontal portion of the slot, enables the hinge to be placed upon either side of the door or upon either side of the casing. When it is desir able to remove the hinges along with the door, they are placed upon the door and the buttons upon the casing. This is ordinarily done in the case of screen-doors. When, however, it is desirable that the hinges should remain on the casing, as when they are used both for screen-doors and storm-doors, and one is put up when the other is taken down, the hinges are placed upon the casing and a set of buttons upon each door. The operation of putting up or taking down the doors is the same in both cases.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent` l. The combination with a hinge provided in one of its leaves with a slot having a wider portion and two narrower portions extending respectively upward and downward from said wider portion, of a button having a head adapted to enter the wider portion and a shank fitted to the narrower portions, whereby the hinge may be engaged with the button by slipping the wider portion of the slot over the head thereof and lowering the hinge upon the button; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a hinge having one of its leaves adapted to rest upon the face of the door or casing so as to move freely thereon and also provided with a slot having a wider portion and a narrower portion eX- tending from the wider portion in a substantially vertical direction, the walls of said slot being rigid with respect to the leaf, of a button adapted for attachment to the door or casing and provided with a head of suitable size to enter the wider portion of the slot and engage the sides of the narrower portion,
IOO
whereby the hinge may be engaged with the door or casing by passing the head of the button through the wider portion of the slot and then moving either the button or the hinge to bring the button into engagement with the sides of the narrower portion; substantially y as described. 5 3. The combination with a button adapted j for attachment to a door or casing, of a hinge, one of the leaves of which is adapted to rest against the door or Casin g and to move freely 5 thereon, said leaf also having a T-shaped ,f slot, the Wider portion of which can be passed over the head of the button and the'narrower AUGUST s. HELD.
