EBENEZER APPERLEY,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF STROUD, ENGLAND.
COMBlNATION BOOK-MARKER, LEAF-HOLDER, AND PAPER-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,796, dated January 25, 1898.
Application filed Mam?! 2, 1897. Serial No. 625,787. (No
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENEZER APPERLEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Field House, Stroud, in the county of Gloucester, England, have invented a new and useful Combination Book-Marken'Leaf- Holder, and Paper-Knife, (for which I have obtained a patent inGreat Britain, No. 4,471, hearing date March 2, 1895,) of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved combined leaf holder, book -mark, and paperknife, whereby a book may be held in an open position and the leaves prevented from turning backward or forward. The article may also be used as a paper-knife.
I will describe my invention by reference to the accompanying drawings, the same lotters of reference indicating similar parts throughout. Figure 1 is a front view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view showing the cross-piece spread out. Fig. i is a front View showing a modification of the device.
A is a fiat strip of sheet metal bent double and provided with pointed ends BB the said strip having been bentover a ring D and connected thereto at E, with one end much longer a paper-knife and the shorter end F a clip or flap for holding the leaves of a book. The pointed end 13 of the flap presses against the knife A.
H represents a cross-piece of sheet metal pivoted at J to the flap F and is capable of turning in any direction.
When it is intended to use the article as a book-m ark, the cross-piece H is turned in the model.) Patented in England March 2, 3.895, No. 4,471.
position shown at Figs. 1 and 2, one or more leaves of a book are placed between the part A and the flap F, and the cross-piece H is then turned round to the position shown at Fig. 3 and will-be across the open surface of the book, one half on one side of the book and the other on the opposite side of the book, thus keeping the book open and preventing the leaves from turning in one direction or the other. p
The part A may, when desired, be used for a paper-knife.
Fig. 4 shows a modification of my invention in which the cross-piece H is provided with a slide K, working between two guides N M, formed on the sides of the flap F. The crosspiece H is capable of sliding from the position shown in Fig. 4 down the blade F, and the slide is retained in any position on the blade by friction.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a book-marker, the combination,.with two fiat blades A and F formed of a single continuous strip of metal bent double so that one blade overlaps the other, of a cross-piece H pivotally supported by one of the said blades, substantially as set forth.'
2. In a book-marker, the combination, with two fiat blades A and F formed of a single continuous strip of metal bent double so that one blade overlaps the other, of a slide movable longitudinally on one of the said blades,
and a cross-piece pivoted to the said slide,
substantially as set forth.
