Description

(No Model.)
W. H TIVY. ROLL PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
Patented Nov. 25, 1896.
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM I-I. TIVY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN ROLL PAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,383, dated November 25, 1890.
Application filed April 11, 1888. Serial No. 270,305. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM H. TIVY, of the city of St. Louis, in'the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roll-Paper Holders and Cutters, of which following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a perspective View illustrating my improvement. Fig. II is an end view. Fig. III is a perspective view of the spring clamp or holder. IV shows a modification.
My invention relates to an improvement in paper-cutters, intended more particularly for use under a store-counter; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed outin the claims.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a plate that may be made fast to the counter 11}, to which are secured hangers or arms 2, supporting a roller 3, upon which the paper 4. is wound.
5 represents spring-arms secured to the under side of the plate, and which carry a plate or bar 6, secured to the lower ends, and which is pressed by the arms against the roll of paper, keeping the roll from backward movement and preventing it from turning forward too freely. The paper passes from the roll between a clamp 7 and the plate, as shown at 8, the clamp holding the paper between it and the plate with sufficient force to give the proper tension, but allows the paper to be drawn through by taking hold of its edge 9. When a piece of paper is desired, it is thus drawn through and cut off against a knife 10, secured to the edge of the plate.
11 represents a rib or projection on the plate in front of the clamp 7, intermediate of the latter and the knife, the object of which is to throw the free edge of thick or stiff paper downward, as shown in Fig. II, to afford an easy finger-hold,when another piece of paper is desired.
The form of clamp I prefer to use is illustrated in Fig. III. it consisting of astrip divided from the ends almost to the center by means of longitudinal slots or slits 12. This strip would be made of material which would spring to a certain extent, and it is held against the counter by hooks 14 of L or other suitable shape. When the clamp is put in place, its outer slotted ends are sprung together slightly, and its construction allows for paper of different thicknesses to be used, (as it will spring more or less, as required.) and it holds the paper between it and the plate with the proper tension, as already stated. In Fig. IV I have shown a modification of this clamp, in which spiral springs 15 are employed in connection with a plain strip or bar 17.
This device is inexpensive and effectually 6 operates to perform its function. The plate 1 serves as a means of securing the parts to the counter; but they could be secured direct, if desired. By the use of the plate, however, the parts can be more readily secured to the counter.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a support, a roll, and a knife, of a spring-clamp 7 and a bar or rib 11, intermediate of the clamp and knife for holding the end of thick or stiff paper. away from the support, substantially as described. t
2. The combination, with a support, a roll, and a knife, of a clamp forholding the paper, against the support, consisting of a bar having slots 12 in its ends, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a support, a roll, and a knife, of a clamp for holding the paper against the support, and hooks for securing the clamp to the support, substantially as described.
WILLIAM H. TIVY.
In presence of- GEO. H. KNIGHT, J 0s. WAIILE.
